Good mornings are a good alternative to hypers.

is the whole thing with no shoes about reducing the distance the bar has to travel? Yes. That distance when going for a max lift, can mean winning and losing and/or a world record.

Do the power cleans in an explosive manner, and this should help your initial pull off the floor. To expand on what Tim said, do your power cleans then add more weight so you do high pulls to right around the lower chest area. Do about three sets of three reps then do another 3 x3 where the top of the pull is at the belly button area. This allows you to increase the weight with each set but make sure you stay explosive or you defeat the entire purpose.

So instead of cleaning the weight, just do a heavy high pull? Sounds good and it also sounds similar to the ballistic shrugs i have been doing.

Pulls are preformed the same way as PC's but w/o racking the weight. Just remember to really shrug the weight hard with yout traps instead of pulling with your arms. Ballistic shrugs/ Hawiian Shrugs/ Power shrugs are great. Probably won't help your pull from the floor but should help your deadlift overall.
