I love to hate them. I've done them heavy/low and light/high. No matter which way you go, they bring in more DOMS than ANYTHING else, including squats. Not that DOMS is an indicator of growth, but it sure as hell is an indicator that something happened!
You do have to learn how to balance, especially if you do them walking, but it's worth learning. How could an exercise that brings in the quads, glutes and hams so effectively be bad?
Thinking they are for sissies is like thinking sissy squats are for sissies.

There are a lot of ways you can do them. Barbell free weight, holding dumbbells, walking lunges, stationary lunges, Smith machine lunges. Just pick the one you feel most comfortable doing or mix it up.
