Are you getting pain or numbness into your leg? if so then you need to see a doctor.
It could be a herniated disk but it could just as easily be a nerve pressing on soft tissue..I would get it checked out just to be sure.

I'm really sorry to hear that Steve-is there anything she suggested that you can do? I had full blown sciatica, pain and numbness down the leg so I know the pain you are in,and the worst thing was painkillers didn't work! It may for you though so give them a go...

Sorry to hear about this....we treat pt's with this condition. If you are given any pain meds certainly try them. A heating pad works wonders as well. An inflamed disc IS better than herniated b/c inflamed will heal without any surgery but unfortunately no less painful

Well she told me to get rid of heat and ice ice ice!!
she told me to do some stretched to releive the pain, which they help. the childs pose, the cobra and the camel. so far so good, still painful.
how long will it take to heal on average?

it depends on how inflamed it is-mine took too long, approx 6 months, but that was partly due to the numbness/tingling in my leg so its a bit different to your situation. I found the cobra stretch the best -how many times a day do you have to stretch? I was doing it 3-4x day for 3 x 15 reps

im doing it 3 times a day, when i wake, at gym and when i go to bed for approx 60 seconds each time. keeping my hips on the floor and my lower body as loose as possible.

lower back is feeling somewhat better today but the base of my right calf/ankle is throbbing with pain, constantly now. i figured out that if i lean in the opposite way when sitting, the pain subsides and is non existant. then as soon as i sit upright again, the pain is back. could it be that the nerve (sciatic or peroneal) is somehow wedged between the discs and is being pinched when sitting upright??
edit as of 10:11: now my toes on that foot are burning....
now im worrying!!

Sorry to hear you are having more trouble with your back again. It is a tricky area but my doc explained to me that if the nerve is pinched, the pain would not go away however, if the pain comes and goes or eases up with a change in position then it is usually due to pressure being placed on the nerve. The more pressure that is placed on the nerve, the further down the leg the pain will be felt. Do you feel any pain in the back of your thigh? Has the chiro advised you to switch to heat after 2-3 days with ice? As my situation is a result of a car accident and requires surgery, most of the stuff I have been told may not apply in your situation but since the pain is beginning to radiate further down the leg I would definitely start pressing the doctor to have some tests done. You might have to stay away from the weights completely for a bit, I know this is tough - believe me, I know, but the complete rest might do it good.
Take care and feel better soon.

I just went to the doctor. (not the chiro). he officially diagnosed me with sciatica. Tiffany, i do not have any pain or numbness in my thigh at all. the pain is localized to my ankle and tingling of my foot. my dr said its because of the fibers that are being compressed, which is why im getting it on my ankle. some people get it in their thigh, he says since i dont have pain there that the fiber that runs down my thigh hasnt been touched. i just went for an xray and he gave me anti-inflammatory medication

I'm glad you went to the doctor Steve. often the pain IS just localised to one area. I get the nerve compression in my foot still so I can't cross my legs without my foot going to sleep... did your doc say anything about going for some PT?

the pain in my ankle is still significant. the pain in my lower back is pretty much non-existent. the ankle pain is in the front of the ankle like as if i sprained it. but it doesnt feel like it sprained it. im worried it could be soemthing different. my gf is a nurse in a cancer hospital and shes filling my head (with good intentions) with all this cancer worry.
could the ankle pain be from the sciatic?

i did alot of research today and i think it may just be a sprained ankle??? i got my xray results and there is nothing wrong with my discs. i remember the day before it happened, i was doing calf raises and i was using diff foot placements. i was doing feet pointed in, feet pointed out and going pretty heavy. could i have possibly torn the anterior tibial tendon?

you would know if you had torn a tendon-you wouldn't be able to walk-I think what you meant and correct me if I'm wrong, is that you may have sprained the anterior talofibular ligament across the front of your foot?? This is the most common ligament sprain... just try strapping it for a few days and see what happens. I don't think its anything major and would stay away from your friends scaremongering-its not helpful and not related in my opinion...

thanks Beckie. My lower back is pain free and im able to bend and flex in the ways i was previously unable to do. the xray results showed no sign of any damage or inflamation. the results did suggest splenomegal, which is an enlargement of the spleen. this is usually associated with diseases and cancer. i went for a CBC blood test to see what is going on. my Dr. is confident it is nothing, but my gf is a nurse in a cancer hospital and she has me worried beyond belief now.

Try not to worry Steve-it may just be some inflammation-I had an enlarged spleen with mono so it may be some immune problem and nothing else.
