Ski, what type of cardio should I do to get really lean? The Stepper? Elliptical Trainer? Or Stationary Bike? What type of cardio do you do when you dieting for competition? I'm trying to come down from 20% bodyfat to reach 7-8% bodyfat. On a side note, do you REALLY think that someone could use the Stationary Bike exclusively to reach this level(7-8%bf) after being so high(20%bf), naturally??

Alpha Male,Welcome to the board.I can only speak from my own personal experience, and tell you what works best for me, and the clients that I train. In the past I would always walk on the treadmill at a decent pac(3.5-3.8).I have gotten very lean doing this, but as of late I have been doing HIIT type cardio on an Eliptical Machine with great results.I`ll go all out for approximately a minute or so ,then slow it down until I`m somewhat recovered, then it`s back to full bore again for about a minute, and so on.I find that I burn almost twice as many calories this way than I did on the treadmill, and in less time.I would recommend 20 minutes to start, increasing it to 30 minutes as you feel necessary. As far as a stationary bike goes,I have never used one for any length of time.Again speaking from my own experience, I found that I couldn`t generate enough of an aerobic effect, without my quads feeling like they were on fire from the lactic acid build-up.On the Eliptical Machine I think you will burn calories for hours after your cardio is done.Of course your diet should be spot on to make the best of cardio training for bodyfat loss.

Tim, thanks for responding! The reason I asked is I'm trying to buy 2 pieces of Cardio equipment for the house in my effort to lose ALOT of bodyfat. I know the treadmill with an incline would probably be the best choice because I used it in he past with good results. But I have repaired ACL in my left knee and I feel it the day after. I plan on buying an Elliptical Trainer & a Elliptical/Stepper(More Stepper than Elliptical). I don't feel any joint pain from either one. I'm going to try HIIT when I get more conditioned. It'll KILL me if I tried now!!! ;D

I think the Eliptical Machine is a great choice! It`s intense but has virtually no impact. As you said, start out slow.I was doing cardio on a treadmill(walking),and when I first tried the Eliptical I almost died!! I only did 10 minutes at a normal to fairly slow pace and it kicked my ass.Build into it, just like you should with the weights when starting back.Good luck!!
