Anyone have any pointers on form for these? I just started doing these with a barbell & they feel extremely awkward.. I get really sore after doing them, so I know they are hitting where they are supposed to, but they just feel shaky. Do they get more smooth with practice?

HA HA HA ........he wants pointers on form...........I sure can`t help you!! I look like a newborn giraffe every time i do those friggin` things.........I always end up taking them out of my routine,I have to use wimpy weight, but it kicks my butt..............I get really sore. :Treadmill Fall: The best advice I can give ,which keeps me from falling on my face, is to step into the lunge slowly, and with power, while keeping the head straight, or slightly looking up just a bit................keeps the back straight!! Also, try to increase the depth of the lunge slowly, because if you are anyhthing like me,you won`t be able to go into a full split anytime soon. I am determined to get better at them as they really work my legs good and I think they`ll help me increase seperation in my quads..................hopefully,if I don`t kill myself doing them first!! ;D

I feel lunges are better than squats.. If you feel shaky doing them with a barbell try doing them with two dumbells. I have always gotten more out of lunges than any other leg exercise.

Ha ha ha.. Tim, I think your description of a newly born giraffe is PERFECT! I'm sure I look the same.. I don't have any problems going low enough, as I'm fairly flexible, but they just feel real wobbly as I'm coming back up. I've seen Skip Lacour do them all reps one leg at a time, then switch to the other leg, and then I've seen Ronnie doing them walking down the street. I don't have enough room to do them walking unless I do dumbbells, but either way they are still awkward. I guess we'll both just have to put in LOTS of practice. With as sore as I am today, I'm DEFINITELY keeping them in, at least every other week!

also, instead of stepping straight out with each leg. Step out at an angle. This will widen your stance and give you more balance.

definitely practice and another option is to walk with a plate held on your chest-gives more central stability and stops the wobbling you often get with BB or DB's.

Practice, practice, practice, and practice some more!! And when you are done practicing you head for the nearest garbage can and puke your guts out...I know i want to everytime i do them..I love to hate lunges but they are awesome on the quads....

Hoops, Try them in a Smith Machine...step back instead of forward.

Since I can't squat too heavy because of back injury, I have relied on walking lunges to help out and to try to keep some shape to my old a$$. I would really suggest, as other have here. to either use dumbells in each hand rather than a barbell. YOu can also just put your hands on your hips and do these- but personally I find the light dumbelss help me balance.
So.. try using dumbells and do walking lunges- it will help you get used to balancing on this movement.

I just received a call from my friend this weekend with the same problem, pretty much told her what everyone is saying here. Step out on an angle to widen stance, use dbs rather than bd and throw in the smith machine now and then for a change up. And most important - DO NOT GIVE UP, practice, practice, practice!!
