What do you feel are the best exercises for developing the Xmas tree in the lower back?

Great question Frank and one i have always wanted to ask but never did. I just put it up on Eric Brosers board also to see what he says to.

A Christmas tree comes from being ultra-lean. No exercise in the world is going to make it show if you are not lean. That being said, deadlifts, hyper-extensions and anything that hits the lower lats will build it. The diet will make it show.
Same thing with abs. You can work them till you are blue in the face. If you are not lean enough, they will not show not matter how good they are.

My favorite exercise for that area is weighted hypers. Keith

Right on the money...........details like that don`t just appear from doing certain exercises, you gotta` be really shrinkwrapped !!

Not being lean enough is typically the reason you won't see it if it is there. Holding water in the lower back or not being fully carbed up will do it to as long as you are lean enough. Was it there the day after your show?

The only thing i did different between the october shows and these 2 was that ididnt take the novadex xt the final 8 weeks like last time...

I understand the whole abs and xmas tree thinkg. BUT, isnt it possible to build you abs out some so they do show better. Even in my october show at 154lbs they still didnt show. So wouldnt adding some mass to them help?

So wouldnt adding some mass to them help? Developing thickness in the abs themselves will make them stand out more. Add in Rope-crunches with a good weight and high reps into your ab routine.................I never used weight for abs but upon adding these steadily into my routine,I got lots of comments in Boston about how thick my abs looked while still being lean.

this is something I need to do-I have small flat abs and even when I'm lean they don't really 'pop'. For my next competition round (in 08) I will be adding in some weighted crunches.

I think Rope crunches definitely help build ab thickness, I've been doing them for years. I believe the abs develope just like any other muscle, make em thick and shredd em!

I'm doing Two sets of hanging leg raises and a set of NAutilus an crunches with the stack for abs and just switched from rack deads to stuff legged deads for the lower back* I am adding in cardio now, and will be cutting carbs the last 6 weeks by another 25% to about 200 a day. Then going to dry out the last week. Going to try Arnold's posing tip of tensing the abs while doing back poses, to bring out the lower back. Hopefully all this will bring out the xmas tree.
