i need a good substitute for the leg press the gym i just joined is not a well equipt gym so to say, it is in a small town. on leg days i usually do leg press and at high reps but the gym i go to doesn't have a leg press machine so what else could i sub in for it? the gym has a squat rack, smith machine and a leg ext that about it for quad equip. what about front squats? i alternate squats and leg press every other week, i will do squats one week and leg press the next.

muffbs2, I would consider walking lunges! Keep the basic exercises like Squats, but if you want to target the glutes without the leg press machine, dumbels walking lunges or smith bar lunges would get the job done!

I agree with Mo. BB squats, smith machine squats, walking lunges or lunges with the smith machine. One thing you could do is superset walking lunges with either bb squats or smith machine squats. Front squats are also great to do as well.

for hams i do stiff leg deadlifts and seated leg curl as of right now, i don't do quads and hams on the same day. some more suggestions for hams would be more than welcome.
rubicon: are you listing those in order as in bb squats the best? bb squat, i am thinking you are refering to bodybuilding squats? i have heard of them before how exactly are the done?

You can do a variation on smith squats where you place your feet further out front than you would doing a straight up and down squat. That will simulate the angle of the leg press and target your glute/ham tie-in the way leg press does.

Squats, power Squats in rack- my fav. Half Squats and/or Quarter in rack- Don't do these every workout!, Jefferson lifts.

Squats, squats, squats...king of all exercises. If I was only able to do one exercise it would be these. This exercise works your whole body.

Think about it this way, if you could squat 600 for 10, or 500 for 20, don't you think your legs would be huge?

That will simulate the angle of the leg press and target your glute/ham tie-in the way leg press does. I've heard of this before and I'd bet it would work for the glutes and hams. Chris Bennett, a top-notch NPC competitor did what he called sum squats where the feet were place wide and toes pointed out a ways. Chris, IMO, had one of the best lower bodies out there onstage.
