I'm trying to figure out how to improv this lift as my gym has no t-bar apparatus.
Any ideas? Preferably something that protects the back a bit.

You can do rows in the corner with a heavy DB to pin the Barbell into the corner and not have it hit ya on the arse. For a handle, grab a triceps extension bar for the pressdowns, and it may work. Other than that, I'm out of ideas.

Yeah- it's what to use as a grip that won't slip/slide. I'll experiment.

Hmm though: use the v-grip to grab the bar, and a small straight bar through the v... hmm I'll let you know if I hurt myself...

If you do Bent Rows, (to quote Charles Poliquin) use a bench of some sort to rest your head on. That way you support your back, minimizing injury, and it also reduces the stress on the lower back allowing you to concentrate more on the rowing/lats instead of supporting yourself. I think CP says to use a incline bench facing away from you. But I'm not too sure, I'm positive that you can find that info on the 'net somewhere.

Yah- I've used the bench like that; put a towel on the edge for extra padding. Works well.
The gang over at Eric's suggested an obvious one I'd forgotten- just use a cable station and do WG seated, pulling to the bottom of the rib cage.

That works, though there is nothing to replace free weights, which I'm sure you know. I've been relying on the one arm DB row of late, which I think it great, and even better (really) is grab a Smith Machine, and do one arm rows in there with the BB "attachment." These work well, and once you find your placement suited to where you want to hit your lats, you can move the tension up and down the lat accordingly. At least I can feel this anyway.
