I realize that few of us do direct adduction/abduction work but I've been thinking about adding it in with the goal of targeting that region and as therapy for my lower back/hip issues.
I'm curious- I've got machines at the gym but was wondering who prefers the machines and who might prefer using a cable station and ankle cuff?
I know that a cuff/standing hit modestly more stabilzer and synergystic muscles.

I've used both in the past and honestly feel the cuff and cable is the better option because it does use the stabilising muscles like you say. Plus you can change the angle you move you leg, straight back,45 degrees or out to the side.

First Comment: I think the abductor/adductor machines were developed by woman as ancient torcher devices for men. Really...look at how the machine works, and consider how we are built! I think I once saw one in a BDSM situation! Now...that out of the way ......... I like to use both. The cable for the same reason Beckie mentioned, because of the utilization of the stabilzer muscles. I like the abductor/adductor for two reasons. For building, I can add and control much more weight on the machine than I can with the cable. Specifically, it hits my outer quads and glutes really well. The second reason is I like to use this machine to stretch my legs and lower back too. It's a good warm up and stretch that really gets in there deep.

Thanks for the feedback- I think I'll pick up a cuff. My issue with the hip abduction machine is that I have very limited range in that direction- and I don't think it's flexibility

I do both exercises with a machine. I think they contribute to total leg development. On stage, small details can make all the difference. I know Eric incorporates both movements in his training also. Frank made me think of something funny....... I have had guys who have seen me doing those movements at the end of a leg workout and ask why am I doing a "girl exercise"? Then the next time they are in the gym they catch the beginning of the leg workout and see the 1,000 pound + leg presses ( real ones, not quarter reps!) and hacks with ten or more plates. Funny how many of them I see on the abbductor and adductor machines after that!
