One of the best ways I`ve found to get a lean muscular look to your physique is to alternate high carb and low carb days.Of course when trying to "lean out" you should also follow a diet that is high in protein ,with low to moderate carbs ,and is low in fat. Keep your protein intake to about 1 gram per pound of bodyweight ,lower your calories a bit, and eat low carbs for 3 days, and then increase carbs for the following 2 days.I find that this keeps your metabolism "guessing," and does not allow it to slow down, and get into a lethargic mode as long as you are doing enough cardio, along with weight training.I find that over time I lose a lot of bodyfat by doing this .Every now and then according to my energy levels ,I will add in a day of higher calories derived from "clean" foods.I got these ideas from Chris Aceto and Fred Hatfield, who recommends a similar Zig-Zagging of carbs and calories. Thus far, I have found this to be invaluable in achieving a low body fat % and retaining muscle size at the same time.

Out of curiosity Tim , do you moniter your ketone levels during your low carb days to assure yourself from going too far into ketosis?

I used to use the Keto-Stix Jeff ,but I no longer do this.I just try not to ever go lower than 35 grams on a very low day. It`s usually 50 grams though, as a rule.I have found that as I got older I am a little more "carb sensitive," and must lower my carbs quite a bit to get really cut-up for a contest.I occasionally try to shock my system if I find that I am not losing bodyfat fast enough, by intentionally going into ketosis, by eating zero carbs for a day or two, hoping this will result in using fat to burn as fuel.I never worry too much about losing muscle, as I increase protein intake somewhat if I lower carbs dramatically. So far it works pretty good for me.

Tim this sounds good I will give it a try. Out of curiousity, do you write up any diet plans for people. If so I would love to send you info about me and see if you could hook me up with a good diet.

airpit,Welcome to the forum!!It could be that your protein intake is not high enough ,or your water intake is low.You will lose some weight, but hopefully it is mostly in the form of bodyfat, that you don`t want anyway.Post your diet, or E-mail me, and I might be able to find the problem for you and help to correct it. twescott2003@yahoo.com
