Tim, Do you still take in simple carbs post wo when trying to drop bf? Yes I do,as I feel at this time, they are best utilized by the body for repair and replenisment........I normally use dextrose PW. If I find myself at a fat burning plateau,or if I am doing a really low carb day,or a few in a row, or as I get closer to my contest,I eliminate the dextrose, and replace it with a plain baked potato,as it is a cleaner, and more beneficial carb sourse. As the contest gets closer and closer, the majority of my carbs will be taken PW and the meal following PW..........always rice, oatmeal,or baked potatoes ,but usually I opt for the potatoes........quicker insulin spike.

Tim. Have you ever tried to do 5 days low and 2 days high? Something like bodyopus or The anabolic diet??

Rubicon,I pretty much stick to the 3 low and 2 high plan........I got this idea from Chris Aceto.......I will at times vary the numbers on all days according to how I look...........sometimes lower on the low days.........sometimes higher on the high days.
You can tweak it anyway you like however,as long as you stick somewhat to the basic premise of the article.

So Tim. have you increased your carbs now in an effort to put on more mass or are you keeping them reletively low in order to remain leaner while trying to build? I read where you said that last years bulk didnt go all that well. You think staying leaner would have been a better option?

I`m definately staying leaner Randy.................I`ve only put on about 10 pounds since my last contest on Nov. 12th. and I still have abs, serratus, and look much fuller.
The difference is more carbs, and also eating much cleaner, except for slight deviations on the weekends.
Last year,I got too fat eating junk, and did not cycle my carbs........though I am not really cycling them now........officially anyway, just kind of doing high and low, according to the training day, and how I look. More carbs on more demanding bodyparts.
I mostly cycle them during a pre-contest diet, where I keep meticulous track of everything.
I do not do well at all on really high amounts of carbs............clean or otherwise,so I keep them mostly low to moderate during a diet ,except for an occasional day or two of very high carbs................ for me personally anyway.
I`m really carb sensitive ,especially now that I am older.
I`ll go into more detail about a lot of mistakes I made during my year off trying to gain size,it may possibly help others.

WOW!! Great. Looking forward to it. I too have trouble with high carbs. Kills my stomach more than anything. I am bringing in a much larger/harder amount of cardio in an effort to eat more carbs. We'll see.. I had them up quite high and boosted myself to 210 doing NO cardio except for my 4 mile walk with the dog each day. Strength and fullness was great, but stomach was not so great.

I can relate, trust me. Before I started dieting for the 2005 contest season,my waist had ballooned up to an all time high.............a whopping 34.5 inches!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don`t recall it ever being above 32.5 in my life, regardless of my condition. I had tried to ingest a dozen eggs a day(mostly raw) plus I ate way too much junk. A whole year with no goal (contest) except to get bigger, caused me to become very lax in my eating habits. As I said,I`ll do a big thread on my mistakes and what I learned from them, but the bottom line for me was to eat cleaner and way less carbs.

Tim,
While you cycle your carbs do you drop your protein portions on your high carb days?
Thanks bro.

Joe,I keep protein at least at 1 gram per pound of bodyweight as a rule.
Lately,I have lowered fats on high carb days, and raised fats on low carb days to keep calories up and have goten good results from it.
I also mix things up at times by cycling calories and all macros at times just to try to keep the body from adapting to a set pattern.

I know one should NEVER go below 1 gram of protein per pound, but I wanted to know if you did the cycling with protein along with carbs. I'm at 1.5 grams of protein per pound but at 80 grams of carbs and when I have a high carb day I usually drop down to 1 g/lb of protien. Thanks again, joe

Hmm you keep your fat intake VERY low huh?? I wonder if I am eating too much fat on my low carb days. I will have nat peanut butter with my protein pudding for meal 2 and meal 4. On my high carb days I eat practically no fat at all except what's in meat.

I am a beginner at this. I have a dumb question. If you do a 5 day cycle, what do you do on weekends. Do you just continue the 5 day cycle and not worry about what day it is? Or are the weekends normal carb days...

appstro.............`bout time you stopped by!! ;D Yes,you just keep repeating the cycle.........your body has no clue if it`s Mon. or Sat., Read through this thread to find a ton of questions regarding how to cycle carbs.......if you still have any questions........... just fire away!! Glad to have you aboard!

Tim, I can relate to the bulking up not being worth it. I've spent the last three yrs. not really training with anything in mind except to get bigger and as you can see by the pics I posted I've gotten rather out of hand!
The thing is I stay on a rather low carb diet throughout the day and just try to eat my starches post workout.
I think I know what it is though, it only takes a few hundred calories above maintenence needs to equal bigtime fat gains over the course of several months or in my case a few years!
Do you think I should allow myself longer than sixteen weeks to prepare?

Do you think I should allow myself longer than sixteen weeks to prepare? Joel, I know exactly what you mean about the extra calories.....in my case,I think I have gotten very "carb sensitive" as I have gotten older. Too many carbs, regardless of the time I eat them, complex or simple,or the GI of the carb,I put on fat. Never used to be a problem when I was younger, as I had a lightning quick metabolism!! I usually always do a 16 week diet.........I did a contest this year in April where I only did 10.5 weeks,(heard about the contest late and had planned on enering it), and won my class in the Over-50, as well as a third place in the Over-35..........I attribute this to staying leaner in my very short off-season. I looked a lot fatter than you do in 2004 after a year of bulking with no contests........I`ll never do it again. Took me forever to get in shape, though I did end up doing good in 2005. "Knowing" your body, and how it responds to dieting, as I`m sure you do,you can probably determine how long it`ll take you to get in shape just by your past contest preps. I would do 20 weeks personally, not because of your present condition, which I do not think is bad at all,but because this way, you`ll have plenty of time to make adjustments,as well as more than likely getting into condition a bit early, which makes fine tuning much easier at the end. I like being ready except for dropping water and the carb deplete/load thing,at 2 weeks out.........then you can coast just a bit. From here on in,my off-season is roughly going to consist of contest prep type eating, but with larger portions, and a bit more relaxed on weekends, but without going overboard. Eating clean, but larger portions seems to make sense to me,and the cheat weekends, will help keep you sane!
