I know you're right Tim, I always get a little paranoid even though I should know better! I agree this getting old thing sucks! I used to diet on potatoes, oats and pasta, and get ripped! Now if I look at a carb I get fat!
On a side note even though its harder to lose fat now I seem to retain muscle much easier. I agree completely that its preferable to be in shape early in order to fine tune the remaining few weeks before the show.

One very good thing about being an older bodybuilder though Joel.....we look light years better than anyone else our ages. Thank God we train,I could not see myself as the average slob next door. ;D No offense meant to any slobs that live next door! #bcouchpotato0xe#

Best quote i ever read on a board was about a guy wearing a tank top and some slob said to him "You either work out a lot or take a lot of steriods" the guy replied "You either eat a lot of junk food or sit on ur ass all day" lmao!

Tim, I just read your article in my new ironman and it was a GREAT article. I'm going to show this to some of my co workers who asks me how I lost so much weight for my compeition. Granted they won't go so extreme but they can understand a bit on where I'm coming from. Great Article!

Tim, I can relate to the bulking up not being worth it. I've spent the last three yrs. not really training with anything in mind except to get bigger and as you can see by the pics I posted I've gotten rather out of hand! The thing is I stay on a rather low carb diet throughout the day and just try to eat my starches post workout. I think I know what it is though, it only takes a few hundred calories above maintenence needs to equal bigtime fat gains over the course of several months or in my case a few years! Do you think I should allow myself longer than sixteen weeks to prepare? Joel, I know exactly what you mean about the extra calories.....in my case,I think I have gotten very "carb sensitive" as I have gotten older. Too many carbs, regardless of the time I eat them, complex or simple,or the GI of the carb,I put on fat. Never used to be a problem when I was younger, as I had a lightning quick metabolism!! I usually always do a 16 week diet.........I did a contest this year in April where I only did 10.5 weeks,(heard about the contest late and had planned on enering it), and won my class in the Over-50, as well as a third place in the Over-35..........I attribute this to staying leaner in my very short off-season. I looked a lot fatter than you do in 2004 after a year of bulking with no contests........I`ll never do it again. Took me forever to get in shape, though I did end up doing good in 2005. "Knowing" your body, and how it responds to dieting, as I`m sure you do,you can probably determine how long it`ll take you to get in shape just by your past contest preps. I would do 20 weeks personally, not because of your present condition, which I do not think is bad at all,but because this way, you`ll have plenty of time to make adjustments,as well as more than likely getting into condition a bit early, which makes fine tuning much easier at the end. I like being ready except for dropping water and the carb deplete/load thing,at 2 weeks out.........then you can coast just a bit. From here on in,my off-season is roughly going to consist of contest prep type eating, but with larger portions, and a bit more relaxed on weekends, but without going overboard. Eating clean, but larger portions seems to make sense to me,and the cheat weekends, will help keep you sane! Tim. That makes TOTAL sense. I am with you on this one. That is my exact plan. I hope to get down to about 4% BF and from there I am planning to just increase cals from the same low carb choices, but be a little easy on myself here and there. Then when it comes time to shed, it should be NO problemo.

By the way. Mo is not allowed in this conversation for at least a few more years anyway.

I just officially declared to my wife that I'm starting my diet and she knows what that means!
One question, do you keep your calories pretty much the same on each day or do you take in more calories on high carb days?

Everyone does it a little differently. For me it means more carbs and calories overall but for some its just a higher carb ratio within a fixed calorie range...

Joel,I used to just keep on cycling carbs with nothing else changed..........lately, I have been adding in more good fats on low carb days, just to keep calories up,and so far, I have had excellent results doing this.
