I'm showing my age but I remember maybe 4-5 overweight kids in school, from K to 12. Mom monitored my food intake, we ate complete meals home cooked, and burgers were a special treat. No special diet or anything, just what she grew up liking she made for us. Pot roasts, fried chicken from time to time, chili, seafood or what passed for it in Oklahoma in the '60's. From time to time she experimented (steak and kidney pie was a failure, she forgot you had to soak the kidneys for 24 hours) . after school we got fruit for a snack, water or milk to drink, did our homework and then went outside to play. Later on there was organized sports but we never stopped moving, there was little or no candy in the house, cookies were treats and the early fast food chains were looked down upon as substandard. We rode our bikes EVERYWERE.
So, what the h*ll happened? My nephew is 22 and already overweight and starting to get hypertensive. when did moving around become beneath most people? I just don't get it.
rant mode OFF

Beckie, My nephew Robbie USED to be fit, he played high school football and baseball and hit the weight room every other day. When I asked him what happened he told me that excelling at sports or being fit was considered elitist and self centered. Professors treated muscled guys and gals as stupid and not worth wasting their time on, some going so far telling the students to either give up sports or drop the course.
When I told him that he could at least run, fitness walk, ride his bicycle to campus, he replied "it will hurt".
