There have been contradictory views on the effectiveness in the past. Some swear by it while some say it is a total waste of time. Here is what Milos has to say about HMB......( article from flex)
Q. I've just purchased a three-month supply of HMB. I am excited to start using it, but I've heard from several people in the gym that it doesn't work. Should I return it or try it?
A: I believe you should create your own experience -- not just with HMB, but with every supplement. How will you know if a certain supplement works for you if you don't give it a try? A while ago, I attended a seminar where a pro bodybuilder was asked the same question. His response was that they don't call HMB a "human muscle builder" for no reason. Of course it works, he said -- you just have to take a bottle a day.
Well, he was almost right. HMB stands for beta-hydroxy beta-methylbutyrate, which is a metabolic byproduct (metabolite) of the branched-chain amino acid leucine. HMB became popular several years ago, and many users were pleased with the results, even though some of the research at the time failed to support its effectiveness as an anabolic or anticatabolic supplement.
After taking HMB, I can confirm that HMB has potent anticatabolic properties. When I first started taking it, I wasn't training or dieting as I normally do, but HMB helped me maintain muscularity. I also felt I was getting leaner, so I believe the studies showing that HMB might promote fatty acid oxidation were accurate. It is true, however, that many people I run into complain that they don't get the desired results. (And some of the most recent research has shown no beneficial effects as well.) However, efficacy of HMB can hinge on many factors, not just genetics, including the diet you're on and how hard and how much you're training.
My suggestion to you is to try six to nine grams a day, accompanied by a high-protein diet (1.5 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight each day). Also, it helps to think positively. If you believe that this particular supplement works, you'll be more inclined to get the results you're seeking, whether from the supplement itself or from the placebo effect. (Modern medicine has proved repeatedly that a placebo often gives the same or even better results than actual medication. The power of autosuggestion can't be denied.) Until you've tried HMB, there's no reason to doubt that this metabolite of leucine won't work as an anabolic or anticatabolic, helping you reach your physique goals.

Bodyfx- Eric had to say this on HMB :
Not a waste if you can afford about 10 g per day. HMB can act as a pretty powerful anti-catabolic in high doses. However, this amount makes it impractical for most supplement users.

Cheers for that! I have found it one of the few supps that works for me and being more of a 'lightweight' means I don't have to take as much!
