What are your thoughts on fruit while dieting? I have been reading some interesting stuff that seems to contradict what we usually would say..

I try to have fruit once a day. If you're reading the same stuff I am, maybe perhaps you know why?
As many here know, I'm a carnivore. I stick to meat!!! Grrrrr! I use my teeth for what they're for. But of late, I'm eating more carrots (about the only thing vegetable related I'll eat) and will have an apple a day (Johnny Appleseed!!!! Tim taught the guy all he knew at the time!) and I'll also have a fiber supplement too.

I believe in all the "good" things about fruit but it is sugar... I use it where appropriate... my brain gets sore fussing about GI, GL, etc.

I always eat fruit,on and off season, but I stick to lower GI fruit like pears and plums whilst dieting and my trainer has no problem with that because he believes in the calories in,calories out principle. The only thing I don't do is eat them by themselves but as part of a meal so they don't spike my insulin too much.

I beleive in fruit on your diet. Dr. Chris Mohr advocates it also. I think the important thing to remember is nutrient "timing". Fruit does contain a lot of sugar, natural sugar, but sugar none the less. I try to eat my fruit (Apples, Grapefruit, Blueberries, Oranges, Banana's, etc) early in the day or prior to a workout, but NOT at night and NOT before bed. I beleive that if the sugar is not "burned" it will have nothing to do but turn to fat. Just my 2 Cents Might want to check out this book on Nutrient Timing. I found it helpful. NUTRIENT TIMING: 224 PAGES JOHN IVY PHD, ROBERT PORTMAN PHD. USING CUTTING-EDGE RESEARCH STUDIES FROM LEADING SPORTS SCIENCE LABORATORIES, NUTRIENT TIMING SHATTERS MYTHS AND MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT HOW TO PROVIDE OPTIMUM NUTRITON TO WORKING MUSCLES. IT SHOWS THAT WHEN THE RIGHT COMBINATION OF NUTRIENTS IS DELIVERED AT THE RIGHT TIME. ONE CAN ACTIVATE HIS/HER BODYS MUSCLE MACHINERY TO INCREASE MUSCLE STRENGTH, IMPROVE ENDURANCE AND INCREASE MUSCLE MASS.

For someone who'd like to be fit, in shape and healty... I would say not to cut fruits! Yes there is fructose in it, but fruits are going to give you a maximum of only 25-30g of carbs per portion which is nothing compared to the majority of foods.
But if you talk about behing contest ready, I would say that fruits should be removed from the diet. To much carbs (versus contest diet foods), GI to high and fructose is not a carbs source which can easily be store in muscle as glycogene.
If you do eliminate fruits from your diet, make sure you take an antioxydant supplement and a fiber supplement on a daily basis.

Eat more veggies, cut out the fruit for contest prep. I should be eating fruit in the off season but I get so used to certain eating patterns that I tend to forget about it. I do try to eat more veggies though.
I did carb load on fruit on a few years back, Jay Robb (The Fat Burning diet) recommends it. Eric Browser doesn't think its a good idea so I listened to him and got into much better shape!

Fructose cannot be easily be stored in muscles as Glycogene... so I agree that doing a carb load with fruits would not be optimal.

I cut all fruit out of my diet when preparing for a contest. I cut out all sugar and only have a little on one day out of the week.
In off season, I enjoy my fruits and usually have 3-4 servings a day. Vegetables I eat all the time and usually have 8 or more servings a day.
