Layne, like Tim, I have read some of the article and it is GREAT! I'm at work so I can't take the time to read the whole thing, but I wanted to say GREAT WORK!
I just did my first 2 shows ever 10/30 and 11/6. I had a good faring, but it would have been great to have read this prior!
By the way, is that you in your avatar? I think I saw you compete in Indiana last July. My buddy did an INBA show and I think you were there. If that was you, MAN, you got SCREWED! You should've won teh OVERALL BRO! Keep it up!

Kyle,That is indeed Layne in his avatar!! I`m reading the article in installments, and it contains some great info for any aspiring competitor. If you are planning on competing, read this info from Layne first!! Good stuff!

Layne has the knowledge and the gift of expressing it articulately as well. Terrific article and will send the link to everyone I know considering competition. Very comprehensive, and I can tell you that the posing section is dead on accurate.
Thanks and great job, Layne.

Kyle Kyle thanks for your kind compliments and yes that was indeed me that you saw... thanks for coming out to the show! I've had a lot of people tell me I got screwed but I thought the guy that won (Chris) looked awsome. He had better calves and thighs than me and slightly more muscle maturity though I think I probably had the best muscularity onstage. Chris is a great guy (been corresponding with him via email since the show) and he definately deserved it. I'm not at all bitter about that loss, I actually thought he probably deserved to beat me. I was happy though... I mean I am only 22 years old and I came a few judging points away from winning a natural pro card. I am very proud of myself for that GerryT- thanks man, I was hoping i did ok on the posing or I knew you'd get me! -Layne

Thanks for the compliment Tim. I find it funny that so many people call me a "co*ky assho**e" o well as my brother says "you'll have that"

Layne,I`ve read all the bullsh*t on the web about you by the haters, especially at one site which shall remain nameless, because I hghly doubt if anyone there even trains ;D. They have bashed me also and at 49 I bet I have a better build than 99 3/4 % of them! You can attribute it to jealousy my friend.....usually because the detractors simply look like sh*t and are mere wannabes!! Keep doing what you`re doing, you have a hell of a future in this sport dude!! Stay hungry!!

I agree with Tim, Layne! If anyone says that, it's because of jealousy! I witnessed that first hand when I was preparing for my show. My boss (I work part time as a trainer at a gym) was cool w/ me until I got close to the show, then my training partner told me that my boss was telling people I was stuck on myself and co*ky. Well, I was a little short, but that's because I am a full time PE teacher, a football coach, work part time at a gym, am a newlywed, and was doing cardio 2 times/day and lifting 5 times/week. Then as soon as I was done w/ my show, he NEVER asked me how I did, not ONCE! In fact, I got some pro quality 8X10's for the gym in my original Hometown that I've lifted at probably 20 times in my life on visits to my parents because they asked, but the gym I've worked at for 3 years (2 years full time as about the only employee) didn't even ask how my contest went! Amazing.
Just keep on keeping on! WHen you do get that muscle maturity ( you 22 year old FREAK!!!! ;D), you will be unstopable! I am scared to come up against you! It would be a great, great challenge!

thanks fellas! Tim I always thought it was cool that I actually had "haters". I think that is a HUUUUUGE compliment. Pathetic on their part... but awsome... having haters is a huge ego boost Kyle... how did you do in your show? congrats on being a newlywed. I am not yet officially engaged but it will be happening soon... to my lovely girlfriend isabel (sorry i have to brag on her when i can )

Beautiful girl Layne, and you`re right the haters will add fuel to your training fire, resulting in more progress, resulting in more jealous haters!! LOL A viscous cycle!

Layne, you're a class act and wiser than many guys I know. And your fiancee-to-be is lovely. The haters are trying to build up what little self esteem they have by bashing others. My grandmother had an expression, which loosely translated from Italian was, "Don't worry what bad people say about you. All it means is that right now they are leaving someone else alone". Agree that photos illustrating the posing help a lot. A friend I coached for Jr USA earlier this year agreed to doing the posing photos for my page. Came out fine and I'm really proud of him. Can take a look when you can at www.bodybuildingreviews.net and click on Gerry's Posing.

Layne, an early CONGRATULATIONS! It's great being married. My wife isn't a HUGE fan of bodybuilding, but she's about as SUPPORTIVE as one can be! She was amazing in my contest prep pushing me when I didn't want to do that last 10 min of cardio or work on posing from night to night. I couldn't have done it w/o her.
Thanks for asking about the comp! IN my first show I got first in my novice class and didn't make top 5 in the men's middle weight open, but found out later, when I received the scores that I had been ranked as high as 4th and actually was 6th out of 18 competitors. In my second, I tied for 5th in a Team Universe National Qualifier out of 13, bu tlost on the 3rd TIE BREAKER and got 6th, out of 13! I feel good about it. Both NPC shows too! The great thing was no one that beat me was under 30 and I'm only (OLD COMPARED TO YOU) 24! I'm excitd about this game!
I'll post some links to some pics!

Layne,
Don't worry about the haters, that means you have made it. Stay focused, keep your eye on the prize. You have a ton of potential. I have been at this game a long time and I wish I was at your level of development at your age. Just remember to enjoy the journey. Life isn't just about the destination, you have to enjoy the process along the way. Don't be afraid to stop and smell the roses.

trust me bro... i LOVE the journey. A lot of people want to put on muscle fast and bit*h about genetics. I've also had people tell me i'm not genetically gifted symmetrically. That's fine with me, I enjoy the struggle, what fun would it be if everything came easy?

That's fine with me, I enjoy the struggle, what fun would it be if everything came easy? True that! I loved going from a fat 185 pound baseball player to a CHISELED 155 pound MACHINE of a baseball player between my frosh and soph years of college. Now the struggle has been putting on SOLID, CLEAN muscle, and nothing's MORE FUN! ;D
