Guys are there signs that will indicate whether or not one should fat load or carb load before a show?
I don't know really what works for me. I know during dieting that fat doesn't help me out much aside from the Omega's, but what about pre-contest? Is trial and error the only way to find out?
Thanks Joe

That`s the best way Joe..........I`m pretty much carb sensitive so I`m gonna` give the fat loading a try at my show in June.
I should be in good condition so I should hopefully be OK if it doesn`t live up to my expectations.
Never really tried it as an all out attempt at filling out,but sick of the carb load deal.

The good old trial and error is still the best way in my opinion! But remember that the usual fat load technic include a CARB LOAD! Because the only way you'll become fuller is by filling your muscles with glycogene (Carbs and water). Now it's yours to see how you react with both of them!
I tried both of them and i prefer the carbs load approach... but seriously, i'm still asking myself question since at different occasions, i had great results with both of them!
Anyway, my opinion on this (for natural bodybuilders) would be not to be too drastic in anything in your last week contest preps.... and that include carbs, fat, WATER and sodium.
Good luck

Like Tim, I too have discovered that I am very carb sensitive and have spilled over from a carb total that many would consider not too high. To fat load you still have to start off with carbs but you don't need much... no more than 200 grams and then switch to fat (steak, nuts, etc.). When I did a fat load I was never so full, hard, and vascular!

Me and carbs do NOT mix. Every time I try to carb up for more than 1 meal I lose everything. My body thrives off of fat.

I'm not to sure what to do. I don't need more then 200g of carbs to fill out but if I use them about an hour before I step on stage I do fill out nicely. I think a little fat won't hurt in the morning and I'll have to give it a try to see what happens.
Is there any bad affects to having some fat before a show? What I mean is you can't spill over with fat can you?
Thanks guys joe

that's the nice thing about fat... it's nearly impossible to "spill over" by using fat to load instead of carbs... however I wouldn't wait until the day of the show to see the results... try a test run several weeks out to gauge the effects on you... and please keep us updated on how it worked for you.

To me carb loading is too sensitive, and complicated for some, to try. I would like to say Fat load, just because you basically binge out and satisfy yourself like you would after a contest. Only, this time you do it prior to a contest. How many times have you seen guys onstage look horrible, then the next day in the gym they look phenomenal? They went home and ate a ton of junk food and filled out. And I doubt they were eating brown rice with a BBQ sauce covered chicken breast! The fat/sh*t loading and the posing from the prior day (s) all contributed.... Sometimes, it's best to go with the K.I.S.S. method...and carb loading is more like the S.C.W.T.D. method (stupid, complicated, way to diet!). #bangelsmiley4td#

I've never really loaded in the traditional sense either way......I train for the last 8 weeks at 30 gms of carbs per day. All I have to do is eat a yam or a potato with my meals on Thursday and Friday, then more beef, 2 whole eggs and 2 rice cakes with unsweetened jam on Sat morning and I'm good to go. I guess it's a load of sorts, but it doesn't look anything like a traditional carb load. Also tried using granola one time.......just don't drink much water when loading on the granola...guaranteed to spill over. I've even heard of guys using granola AND peanut butter together for their loading phase. I eat so much beef I'm fat loading all year!!! ;D

I got 5th out of 8 in the LH class. I wasn't ready and did it for the stage experience, but it's hard for me to loose in anything anytime so that's why I didn't say much. I have to say I've gotten better with every show and it's my second contest prep ever so it's all a learning experience. I'm having fun reguardless. I'm ready for this weekend though and I plan to add some fat such as a steak the night before and a few egg yolks on the morning of. It seems to work for me, but throughout my prep I've had to keep my fat virtually non-existant eating white fish, egg whites, and chicken only for the past 12 weeks.
