how do you lot go about choosing music for a routine? My trainer chose my last music based on my preferences but when I compete again next year,I'd like to do it myself. Down here they prefer not too dancey in NZFBB....but I don't like too slow either!

Beckie, you may choose your song from one of these reasons:
- Theme (For exemple: I did a Flintstone theme routine and a Price Is right Theme routine)
- Motivation (For exemple: I used one of P.O.D.'s song because it's a great motivation song for me)
- Rhythm and beat per minute (For exemple: Sinatra's "I wont dance" song had the perfect rhythm for me to pose in one of my routine)
Good luck!

I've always made the decision based on preference and rythym. I listen to music that gets me moving or emotionally charged. Then I take a few of those songs and listen for a rythym that will work with a routine. Last year I picked a Jack Johnson song that had a good beat, felt a little lively (to me anyway) and timed it perfectly with my poses. I had other songs I liked a little better but they did not work for the routine. I will also tailor the routine for the music a little if needed. My previous song was TIME by the Chambers Brothers. It has a strong beat and I really like to get music that varies from the typical. I can't tell you how many times I have been to a show and you will hear the same song 3 or 4 times. I don;t even want to count how many AC/DC songs I've heard people pose to.
The one other aspect I think that plays a HUGE roll in music choice is the type of physique you have. IF you have a very classic smooth flowing body then something more along a classical tune would work, it would also lend to a routine that suits your physique more. I can't imagine a mass monster like Markus Ruhl posing to a classical song with really smooth transitions and graceful posing - it just doesn't fit. Likewise you can't have a physique like Frank Zane and pose to AC/DC's Thunderstruck. For me anyway it doesn't work.
Just my .02

I do agree with you on the type of music really needs to fit that person.
Sucks that they wont let you do the dancey music I know that gets the crowd going everytime.

I don`t pose to the music, instead,I just use it as background music................I`m very guilty of not practicing enough on my posing.
I think if I practiced more,I would be a damn good poser, but I`m usually too damn depleted and tired to work on it for hours at a time. #bhammersmash6iz#

LOL, Tim! Good thing we aren't neighbors. You'd be practicing every day the last couple weeks out!
My late wife was a choreographer and much better with music. I just recommend using something you like and will inspire you to do your best.
You can pose to the music or use it as background to complement your routine. Whichever works better for you.

one thing i notice is that when "legendary music" from like warrior movies ...or slow songs people tend to fall asleep.
I think some exciting song is good to wake the people up especially since it is a "show" after all..

I'm with Tim as in I really don't practice with music. I just pick what I like at the time and then I wing it. I still have fun up there with the crowd but I got no rhythm. OH well! Maybe one day I'll get a friend who is good at that stuff and he can chorography it for me.
of the shows I've done. I did Kid Rock's American Badss, A Twista song.
I thikn this one I'll do a lil john one HAHA YEAH!!!!

Pick something you really like and will inspire you, massiv. Someone good with music mixing can even blend parts of two or more tunes if you have a hard time deciding.

Personally, I like to pic a slow song and then have it mixed or changed to a faster paced song. I try to choose 2 songs that fit my personality. At my last show I did the beginning of "Right Now" by Van Halen. It was very slow movement and classic-type poses. I tried to move as graceful as possible. It was then mixed/scratched into "Mama Said Knock You Out" right at the part where he says, "Don't call it a come back...." and I hit a lat spread. It works for me because I am laid back at times and high strung at others. It allows to me kind of escape myself and show off my personality physique in a fun way.
