Eating it during pre-contest. I had a friend give me a crap load of elk steak. It is trimmed totally lean with no fat or anything else on it. No salt or anything. Do you think that would hurt my diet any??? 16 more days and a wake up. Everything is going to well to screw up now. Just looking for something different.

Eat it! Elk is very lean. Its full of protein and low in fat. Just need to look up whta the protein and fat content are. Just so you can watch your macros. I know deer for 4 oz has 35g protein and 3g fat. I'll look up elk for ya and post it up here...

Hoopie,
Thank you. I will have some steak tonight. Yummy. I will cook it on my George Foreman Grill to make sure it is really lean.

I buy Buffalo which is very lean, low in fat.. Never tried Elk though, sounds good. I just don't like gamey tasting meats like Venison, is Elk gamey tasting?

If you're worried about the fat you can always boil it and skim the fat after it cools. I have recently been doing this with my ground venison and it makes a huge difference in the way I digest it . The buffalo I get has a higher fat content that I previously thought, itmust be a mixture of beef +. So I am going to be doing that for the buffalo as well. I tried it with 93% lean ground beef and it works wonders. It kind of funny though, the fat when it cools is so different between the venison and the beef!?!?!??
Give it a shot and enjoy the change.

I've never really had true wild meat. Eat buffalo from time to time but it's not wild. I think I remember your a big-time hunter so go for it John.

I have used venison, buffalo, and elk during my dieting phases and they are all awesome! Lean and rich in protein.

Eric, does this mean I can eat venison/buffalo/elk steak during my contest run right now? Or I guess a better quewstion woudl be, what types/cuts of these could I eat pre contest? There is an elk farm just down the road from me and I've been meaning to go get some for a couple years now.

I had elk all the time when I was preping for my contest. It's GREAT and such a treat when you're used to eating burger instead. It shouldn't mess you up at all, but then again, everyone reacts differently to different things. But if you don't eat it I'll be happy to send you my address so you can send it my way haha Best wishs!! ~C

ARRRRRGH i'm almost out of deer meat....NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Gone thru almost 2 full deer with my 2 diets...Thank god hunting season is just around the corner.. I feel you pain!!! My stock is almost gone and with a contest diet coming up sooner that later I will be in trouble. Luckily it is almost hunting season and I plan to land 2-3 this year. That should keep me stocked without having to ration any of it! Sal

I found Bison and Ostrich great protein and very lean, although the ostrich is pricey. Tastes just like any other steak!

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE VENISON AND BISON, PROBABLY MY FAVORITE NON POULTRY MEATS EVER.
AS FAR AS POULTRY, I REALLY LIKE EMU, ITS ALMOST LIKE A RED MEAT.
