I mentioned this in my journal, but in case anyone missed it the promoter of the Natural Northern USA called me the other night and informed me that the winner of the Master's division failed the urinalysis! That bumps me in to 4'th place. No big deal really for me, but I thought what a rip off for the guy who is now the official winner! The contest rules were if you fail the drug test you have to reimburse the money that it cost plus mail the trophy to the rightful winner. At this point all the fun of winning the show is over! Its standing up in front of the crowd and being announced as the winner thats the rush!
Anyway somebody's always trying to beat the system!

Yeah, thats happened to my trainer-the guy that beat him subsequently failed the test, but it meant Joe(my trainer) missed out on the National title because they didn't test him! i think the winner and runner up should BOTH be tested...

They tested the top three plus two random people out of each class so I guess they are pretty through. Why do people have to cheat? If you want to use drugs to compete there are plenty of shows to enter!

Great for you Joel............bad for the winner loser, and I do mean loser!!
To each his own is my philosophy on the use of anabolics,I could care less either way what choice a person makes, but to compete in a natty show while on drugs is low and the mark of a scumbag IMO.

Yes, I agree. I compete in non tested shows and I don't think twice about it but when I enter a tested show I do expect people to be natural!

The big thing is that most shows are ONLY tested by random and winner only urinalysis.... This does NOTHING to stop anyone from using growth hormone... Guess you just have to expect it..

The promoters said that they have someone fail the drug test about everyother show. They test the top three in each class plus two random. After the prejudging we had to go submit a urine sample before we left the auditorium or be disqualified.

Can't go much lower than that. As other have said, there are non tested shows for these athletes to compete in.
And as Joel said, the true winner did not have his moment in the sun that he worked naturally for. Too bad there can't be testing beforethe show, but of course that would be virtually impossible! Shame all around!!

Another one for the good guys!
I did this show in 2005.
The promoters DO try to do a good job, and I commend them for that....but I have seen and heard problems there.
The show I did (and placed 3rd, so I did test), had about 10 people milling about in the testing area, and at least 4-5 people using the rest room facilities as the testing was going on. In my experience from the military, the chain of custody of the samples could easily be compromised, if that's what someone wanted to do.
I also observed a show there, that the overall winner was "allegedly" natural (no names mentioned). NO WAY! Nobody gets that big, at such a young age unless they are a genetic freak, or they're getting a little "chemical help".
I like the show. They have great sponsors, and give away great freebies to the athletes. It's a good show for a beginner to get they're feet wet. They also donate a lot of money to the Cancer Society from their proceeds, and that is commendable.
BUT, is it a level playing field for natural vs enhanced athletes? I don't think so. I personally will not compete in this one in the future.

The show I was just at had a few seriously HUGE dudes. Natural? I think not. Just not on Anabolic's maybe.. Just gotta go out there and beat them with some FREAKY conditioning.

Joel, i had two different feelings reading your post. First, i was happy to see that your "natural" federation was serious enough to really test contestants, which is not usual, but on the other hand, i felt frustrated to realize that another bodybuilder tryed to cheat by competing in a natural show. I dont care what people use, and i respect everyone's decision, really… but what is frustrating to me is that i dont understand why someone would like to win by knowing he is cheating… But by looking at the amount of people cheating, i sometimes believe i'm the one missing something…
Congrats again on the excellent showing Joel!

I get seriously frustrated when I see 'drug enhanced' athletes turn up at our drug tested shows-I guess they're just thumbing their nose at the system..why don't they just compete against their own 'kind' that way its a more level playing field?! THats why I like OCB so much, they are serious about their testing regimes.
