Was listening to some tunes, and thought, "Hey, Let's see what everybody at WOTW think!"
Evening Show. Contest Music.
Classical? Hip-Hop? Somthing that hits home to YOU emotionally?
I've used a little of both, and spent big bucks get+ng them mixed!
What do you think? What brings you that OVERALL WIN!

Honestly, I don't use anything slow or anything r and b. To me it BORES the crap out of the crowd. I try to find upbeat music or something rock. So far I've used american bad ass by kid rock, one twista song, and then I got creatvie and made that mix you see in the video with me talking and then adding Mudvayne's dig to it. So if it was me, id go with rap and rock.

I like rock or a heavy sounding ballad a la Cheap Trick or Whitesnake

So far I've used:
Usher Mix..started with one of his slow songs....stopped ...had a voice over that said, "NO,NO,NO...give the people what they want to hear!" then went into his "YEAH!" song. Had the entire place on their feet clapping to the music! And if your wondering..yes, I can dance to it too, and yes...took 3rd in that contest.
Tried Phantom of the Opera...I got into it. Started at back of stage....and came forward very fast, and ominous. People looked entrigued but no emotion. Took 5th in National Show.
Tried American Idol "Do I make You Proud"...It gives me tears in my eyes every time I hear it, even on stage (nice effect). People didn't get into it. Took 2nd Place in one contest, tried again in diff contest, took 3rd in a National Contest.
Considering going back to the upbeat stuff....but will need a REALLY good Remix.
Have a song from the Movie SHRECK (HERO REMIX)...I wanted to try...but feels a bit too fast.
Considering some Aerosmith, or some hip-hop (WORD-UP).

Usually something upbeat and rhythmic is best.
Slow music should only be used if you are a very good poser and have a polished routine. Classical, opera, etc. require holding poses, smooth transitions, etc. more than upbeat stuff. if you do not pose well, slow music will expose that more than fast music would.
Just use whatever appeals to you that will inspire you to pose your best. And practice nomatter what music you use!!

I'm a fan of using mixed music. Slow to Fast or Fast to Slow. Either way. I'm also a fan of selecting a song that either hits home, or shows "YOUR" personality and then selecting another song that exposes a different part of your personality. I have done a slow song w/ a very good beat or rythm to pose too and then mixed into "Mama Said Knock You Out" for a few reasons. One because I can be laid back and I can be all up in your face crazy intense and that's what I'm shooting for. The other reason is "Mama..." is such an arrogant co*kY song. I'm not an arrogant/co*ky guy, so it lets me be someone/something I'm not - do a little acting while onstage. It makes it fun for me and I have always gotten great response from the audience. Next time I'm thinking of something different though.

It has to be something I like..if I don't like the music I won't enjoy myself up there. It has to put you into a comfortable place so you can show yourself to the best degree possible. Honestly, I don't get TOO carried away with the music , mixing,re-mixing, etc.,.... I just pick a favorite ( always rock...that's what I like)....my real focus is ALWAYS on the mandantory poses and pre-judging...that's where the show is won. To me, THAT'S the contest...the evening show is entertainment and about just having fun. Usually.....the best body wins, not the guy with the best routine. John, who was a PHENOMENAL poser in the classical sense, once told me , "always remember...it's a BODYBUILDING contest, not a DANCE contest." I've seen alot of great routines with incredible music, done by guys who could dance circles around me, yet alot of times those guys were simply beat by a better body. If the evening routine with music was everything... Rusty Jeffers would have won the Pro Masters hands down ( I still think he should have won anyway!)

Great post, Keith. Rusty was not only a top poser, but in top shape as well and should have done much better at Pro Masters. He was equally incredible when he turned pro at Masters Nats in 2004.
Some shows the evening show is also judged, but 98% of the time it is won in the prejudging. But a haphazard routine could still negatively influence the judges. Prejudge rankings are not set in stone.

I find myself in preference of hard rock/metal along the lines of the music I train to. The problem with this is that with cheers and other noises from the crowd, many times vocals cannot clearly be heard - so the fast paced music just becomes "noise" and the meaning and intensity is lost to a certain degree.
For my next show, I am going to try an instrumental from a soundtrack, in my case the theme from the show "The Contender". It has a Rocky feel to it, with clean, bold sound to it.

bgbd!
Your right...a lot of vocals do get lost...especially if the DJ they're using isn't the best.
This year I'll probably stick with some USHER....I have a good remix I had made, that starts slow...and then picks up.
NEXT YEAR: ALL NEW MUSIC!!!
If I do the North American here in Cleveland....I'm thinking of using " WE BUILT THIS CITY ON ROCK-N-ROLL!".. I'm a home town Cleveland boy, and this IS the hometown of the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame!
Might work ?!?!?

Sure it would work, especially since so many are familiar with the song.
I train from time to time with Bill Norberg who won the AAU Mr America back in 88, and posed the question of contest music to him a few times. He indicated that he used to use the theme to Superman. As a knee jerk reaction, I remarked that so many had used it before and that has been overdone. He looked me squarely in the face and said "If someone has the body and has some skill in posing, you will never forget their routine when done with a classic theme like that one". After that I started thinking what song I could use to carry that kind of impact.

I know what you mean.
I did a show last year where I used the Theme from the Phantom of the Opera....Strong, bold music....I liked it....the audience didn't! I thought they all fell asleep.
That's why I thought I'd try something a little more upbeat.

It has to be something I like..if I don't like the music I won't enjoy myself up there. It has to put you into a comfortable place so you can show yourself to the best degree possible. Exactly. Pick music that you like. Not music you think the crowd is going to like. You can't pump up the crowd if your not pumped up yourself.
