Tim, and everyone else as well;
I've been reading here daily for a couple of weeks now, and I think I've gathered the bravery to say "hello". My name is Ray.
Eight years ago I was US Army fighting shape. I ran 2 miles in 14:10 and could sure do situps and pushps - that's what the Army rewards. I did some lifting for the way it made me feel but I never tried to bulk up or really sculpt my body.
I got out in '97 and I've really let myself go to scrap. I'm sick and disgusted of seeing a football-shaped man in the mirror and it sickens me to admit that I got to 300 couch-potato pounds.
I have started making myself better. I shall not stop. For over eight weeks now I've been lifting 3 days per week and cycling or walking briskly 3 more days. The benefits in fighting depression and simply having energy for living came on like a flood of relief and joy after the first ten or 12 days.
Now I have decided to get serious about building a physique for myself. I know basic freeweight movenments and have a better-than-average garage full of gear.
I think I have decent potential for the classic "V" shaped male body - @ 200 lbs & 6' as a non-lifter I had 44in. chest and 34in. waist. I think I've got a decent platform to build upon once I lose the fat.
The nutrition picture has been somewhat of a puzzle to me, but I've kept reading. Today I jumped into those waters and after my 5:30 AM routine I tasted my first protein powder in a post-workout bowl of oatmeal.
I'm not quite sure how to play the dietary picture right now. I've obviously got much fat to loose. I have no pressing deadlines for muscle mass at this point. I *will* stop being a lardball and become a person of enviable physique, but I wish to do it in a safe and intelligent way.
I've got a long, long way to go and I feel like the naive child on the block. Thanks for the service this board has already provded me.

>I've got a long, long way to go and I feel like the naive child on the block.< ;D
Don't feel like this, WireNWood. I have done nothing for twentyfive years and was slowly killing myself. Being a System/Network Analyst I am tied to the desk and it is not hard to see what this kind of life can and will do to you if that's all you are going to do. On top of that came the damned cigarettes and rich and fatty foods. Thank God no drinks as I never was into this kind of stuff. Important is that you have realised and started to do something about it as a consequence.
In terms of losing fat and sticking to a diet I can safely say that this shouldn't be a problem as Tim's website is a treasure chest, providing a wealth of information. I can admit that I have already lost 5 pounds in three weeks by following Tim's way of dieting. I have started to kick my buts sixteen weeks ago and I have also kicked the damned smoking three weeks ago. Guess what? I simply feel superb. Don't give up mate and keep on doing what you are doing. You are on the right path. Also and finally, the fact that you joined the Army should make things a lot easier for you since you are of a totally different mindset. Welcome to the board and all the very best to you.

Ray! Welcome!' I was in the Army for 14 years. BLew out my left knee and they seperated me with a medical in 92. Sat in an office for 10 years after that and got fat. I'm only 5'2" and weighed 185 lbs with a 44 inch waist. I decided that enough was enough. My wife had gastric bypass surgery, and I decided the best way to support her was to get to the gym too. To make a long story short. In 3 years I dropped down to 135 lbs. Then got BEEFY to 185 again. The differnce was now I had a 30 inch waist! I have compted as a bodybuilder 4 times in two years and have ALWAYS placed in the top 5, and two of the shows were national shows! The reason I'm telling you all this is because I'll be 50 soon. So you can do it too brother. You are never too old, and it is never too late. This is a great board with a lot of very knowledgeable people. Like Tim said, you've taken a big step, now just keep going. This is a sport/lifestyle that is 24/7, and being consistant is key. Anything, anything at all that I can do to help, PLEASE feel free to ask! It will be my pleasure to help out a brother! BEEFY

Welcome to the boards Ray, and first of all, don't be so hard on yourself!!!!!!!!! Let me tell you that ANYONE who gets up at 530 a.m. to work out has a hell of a lot of will power, and that's what it takes to reach goals. And just remember, "it's not where you are at now, but where you are going that counts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Vin.
