New here. Found this site while looking for female body builders photos from the 80's (Dona Oliveira mainly). I used to BB "way back when" but never competed. Stopped working out sometime in the later 80's but always wanted to get back into it. Don't know if I will ever get totally back into lifting as I have 2 herniated disks and a old shoulder injury (broken shoulder) that prohibits pressing. I am still very interested in body building both women and men and hope to meet some interesting people here. Liz

#awelcomesmiley4jo# Hi Liz, and welcome. Sorry to hear about your back, I'm currently scheduled to have surgery on my lower back in March and have already had a triple fusion in my neck (all due to injuries received from a car accident 5 years ago). What types of physio have you done? Is surgery and option? I know it will take some time and I will have to go slow and much lighter than I am used to, but I hope to be back in the gym very soon. Even if we can't train hard enough to compete, you can't keep us out of the gym ;D Hope you stick around so we can trade tips on training alternatives

#awelcomesmiley4jo# What types of physio have you done? Is surgery and option? Hi Tiffany, I want to avoid all and any surgery as much as I can. I went through the usual physical therapy routine with no relief. I actually think it did worse for me. A friend then convinced me to see her chiropractor and it's been no looking back since then. I have L3 and L5 herniated disks and I also have arthritis of the spine. Surgery could be an option in the future if I don't take care of my back now. I've been able to keep it in check with making sure I do everything "right" and get adjustments as needed. The only time I have issues now is raking leaves or shoveling snow. Lifting up to 50 pounds is not a problem. The shoulder I broke does not move in the same plain as the other one so pressing a straight bar ends up with my left arm in a normal position and my right arm positioned more back. It also clicks rather hard on the way down when pressing. Not a nice feeling at all! Actually, any work on that shoulder that requires a full range of motion with a considerable amount of stress is a no go- such as push ups, chins, etc. Hopefully I can come up with some type of workout that I will enjoy. Sorry for the long explanation. Liz

Liz....
Put the word out when you are ready, and I'm sure the members here could come up with some ideas to assist your workout without further aggravating the shoulder.

I hear ya on the surgery. Wont bore everyone again with my story but I too have a chiro that I have been seeing ever since my accident and we have been able to keep things in check until recently when the chair I was sitting in slipped while using the arm rests to help me up. Even his treatments now hurt more than they do good so unless the neurosurgeon knows something my family doctor and ortho doc don't, its under the knife for me. When I do recover I will rely greatly on the members here to help me get back in the gym and figure out ways to lift without causing stress to the lower back until it is healed and stronger. I know everyone here will be a great help once you are ready, Beckie especially as she has had both lower back and shoulder problems, is back training and is a personal trainer.
