Today's Topic: Absorbing Vitamins And Minerals
RDA values (Recommended Dietary Allowances) take into account the fact that absorption of most vitamins and minerals is not 100%. In fact,absorption of most minerals is not especially efficient.
There aremany factors that affect absorption; these include othersubstances inthe intestine that can inhibit or enhance absorption and levels of the nutrient already in the body. Examples are fiber (binds minerals) and vitamin C (increases iron absorption). If you are iron deficient,your absorption is better than if you have normal body stores.
RDAs are usually higher for men simply because they usually weigh morethan women. There are a few real sex differences in requirements of most vitamins and minerals.
