Orange Juice (and All Fruit Juice)
Fruit juice has about eight full teaspoons of sugar per eight-ounce glass. This sugar is typically a fruit sugar called fructose, which is every bit as dangerous as regular table sugar since it will also cause a major increase in insulin levels.
Further, many commercial orange juices are contaminated with mold from damaged fruit that are processed. So if you drink commercial orange juice regularly you will be exposed to these mold toxins.
This doesn’t mean that you should avoid fruit, just fruit juice. When the fruit is intact and whole, its fiber will somewhat moderate the release of fructose into the bloodstream as well as somewhat moderate insulin release. However, if you are overweight, have high blood pressure or high blood sugar, it would probably be wise to avoid most fruits until you have these problems under control.

Good post, Tim! A lot of people think fruit juice is so good for you, since "it's made from fruit and you have to eat lots of fruits and vegetables".....they don't realize that it's really full of sugar, and you don't get the fiber like in whole fruit.
As far as whole fruit goes, what are your preferences in terms of not spiking insulin too much? I've heard citrus is the best to eat for that reason; which ones should be pretty much always avoided?

According to Dr. Greg Ellis, he says that Fructose has a rating of 23, very low on the glycemic index. But he also say that's it's almost instantly converted to fat-debunking the glycemic index scale. Either way, I still stay away from fruit juice. Fruits as well, but I'll still have an apple or something here and there (I prefer lower carb diets).

I pay no attention to the GI......it`s great for diabetics, but doesn`t apply to bodybuiling IMO.
Fruits can be a great food, depending on your goals.
I eat some occasionally for their many benefits, but I eat none pre-contest.
I very seldom drink any juice at all........it`s a waste .

I used to drink a 1/2 gallon of OJ a day, plus some cokes and mountain dews, plus the coffee. Now it's just water, skim milk, and coffee. The is one thing I won't give up is coffee. Although I don't live on $4 cups from Starbucks. Their coffee is awful, IMO.
