George Frenn, one of the founders of the original WESTSIDE BARBELL CLUB, located in Culver City, California, is a pioneer in the development of strength training techniques, most notably the popular high box squat (19 inches), and the low box (14 inches).
During his career George has held numerous national titles in Track and Field and in Powerlifting. He was a member of the 1972 USA Olympic Team in Munich, Germany.
Currently, George continues his involvement in strength training while completing his studies for a Ph.D. in education. In March, 2004, George Frenn was inducted into the National and California Powerlifting Hall of Fame.
The ceremony was held prior to the USPF California State Powerlifting Championships at the Joint Training Base in Los Alamitos, California.

George Frenn on powerlifting "guru" Louie Simmions:
You can e-mail a comment or question to George Frenn THE REAL TRUTH
I have read over and over article upon article about Louis Simmons and the box squat. The facts are very simple.
Louis Simmons is a fraud who was playing off of the fact that I was not publicly interested in Power lifting any longer and decided to take advantage of this fact. He is a business man and managed to win some championships. Therefore, he is now a world authority on Power lifting and training.
Louis Simmons had never met Bill West and never set foot in the original Westside Barbell Club which was invented by Bill West and myself. All of the articles that Mr. Simmons has eluded to with a reference to the Westside Barbell Club do not refer to the Westside Barbell of Culver City. It refers to the Westside Barbell Club of some city in Ohio.
When I read some of the articles that Simmons and others have written, I called Mr. Simmons and tried to negotiate a deal with him to sell him my name for a mere $5000.00. He refused and had his lawyer e-mail me wanting to know what claim that I had on the original Westside Barbell Club.
The proof is very simple. I have always believed musclemen are smart so do it this way. Bill West won the AAU National 198 pound class in 1966. I won the 242 pound class in York, PA National AAU Championships and took Best Lifter Award from the hand of Bob Hoffman himself. That’s how I got on to the cover of Strength and Health.
Louis Simmons did not start competing until the 1970’s by his own words. His continual use of the title Westside Barbell Club is a lie and fraudulent. I have a Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology from California State University Long Beach. It was Bill West and I that developed the techniques that took Bill and me to World Record levels.
It was I, George M. Frenn, who wrote the original rules of Power lifting that were adopted by the National AAU with the help of Bob Hoffman and Rudy Sablo and made it into an international sport. It was I, George M. Frenn, who put on the first International Power lifting Competition between USA and Great Britain September 19, 1970.
I have never told this to anyone until now, no brag just fact. I was the first to total 1600, 1700, 1800, 1900, Jon Cole was the first to total 2000 and I was the first person to total 2100 pounds on December 12, 1970; Cover of Sports Illustrated, July 6, 1970. I was the first person other than Paul Anderson, himself, to Squat 850 pounds and Deadlift 812.5 pounds. This broke Hermann Goeners deadlift record set in 1927, Don Cundy’s record of 800 pounds, September, 1967, and Bob Fletchers record of 804 pounds set in 1968 as I remember.
Louis Simmons had nothing to do with any of this. What he has done is to take over the name of the Westside Barbell Club and then without permission or payment, used my name and that of Bill West to build a business off of my techniques which took me years to figure out the Physics Principles of Heavy Power lifting.
What he has done is the lowest and yet the highest form of flattery: Plagiarism!
He has used my ideas and materials to make his way through the strength world and then build a business. Well good for him.
I know this: When I squatted a world record of 765 pounds against Jon Cole on December 6, 1969 with only 6 weeks of training: because I was in Japan throwing the hammer winning the Pan Pacific Games: I asked Paul Anderson himself what he thought of my squatting technique? He answered: “Boy, you squats real good!”
That’s something that Simmons will never be able to duplicate or rip-off. He claims to have trained all of these champions: remember talk is cheap!!!!!
More to come on this subject in a later piece. Remember this: don’t be fooled!!!! There is nothing new in the field of training and increasing human performance. There is no easy or quick way of becoming a Champion. It takes dedication, hard work and what another Olympic Team member told me: “George, it takes single mindedness of purpose”. Bob Backus.
I made my career with the help and encouragement of Olympic Athletes becoming one myself, USA Olympic Team, 1972. Louis Simmons used what I had started, thinking I was dead, to make his business start and has used my name and that of Bill West and that of the Westside Barbell Club WITHOUT PERMISSION! HE IS A FRAUD!

Yeah. The Louie Simmons thing. I can show you email correspondence I've had with Frenn that would make you laugh. He's a moron. I even have the infamy to have my name posted at his site in a couple of his diatribes.

I read a few things about it on Joe Roarks board and that is the general concensus there too.
Why try to cash in now over a name he used in the 60`s for his powerlifting club?
Greed!
