Just thought that I would share the info in ref to my back injury that eventually led to my retirement from bb competition.
Scenario---I was performing a set of bb rows with 135lbs, wearing a belt with a velcro strap, the strap came undone midset and that was it for me. My entire spine shifted, then add in 2 years of excruciating pain, too many pain meds + a little bout with depression.... Then, I underwent an experimental treatment utilizing the DRX 9000 machine. My sis works for a chiropractor that offered this treatment....it's a godsend. My x-rays still look the same but there is no pain whatsoever. I don't even take aspirin anymore.

That sucks Kim,but I`m happy you`re OK now.
I wear a belt all the time, and have argued with people about it on the boards, but I don`t take chances with my back, as it always kinda` feels a little out of alignment.

I understand the back thing completely, been living with the problems for some 23 years now, it can really put a damper on your program, glad you are doing much better...

You know I get on my trainees all the time of importance or form, and never give it up for numbers, who cares the weight you lift, in time with perfect form and proper diet your weights will increase and you will get bigger and stronger. I sound like a broken record to them when it comes to protecting that back, I have seen way to many procedures done and the people are just never the same, its really sad...

I wear a belt, use straps, and wrap my knees.....I don`t care what anyone says about all that crap about the core getting weak because of it.
I`m in this for the long haul, like forever, and at my age I take no chances.
Been training since Methusla was a pup, and have never been seriously injured, thank God!

Ski, I look like a mummy when I lift, neoprene sleeves on my elbows, knees, wrist wraps, wrist straps, weight belt and doing heavy Triceps knee wraps on my elbows and working sets for Legs knee wraps over the sleeves, I am close to Methusla but a few more years to go and hopefully no more injuries...

I'm failing to see the point of this extra support. It appears that you are neglecting "support" muscles rather than strengthening them. I see it all the time and especially in the powerlifting realm were people over rely on gear and support. Remove the gear and lower the wieght.

Jade + UncleJesse: What's you opinion on the DRX9000? Chris, Thanks everyone. The DRX9000 therapy was a godsend for me. Check out my x-ray, L4 & L5. I went through 20 treatments, the disc configuration stayed the same but space was created between the discs & therefore 99% of the pain is gone. Hope this makes sense. The cost of the treatment is $2,000 and so well worth it. One year later, I am doing great & honestly if Gladiators came back.....I am so there. Jade

I am always worried about my back. My gym only has 1 belt and its quite cheap, nothing stirdy, but thats what i use. While doing deadlifts tho i feel a slight tightness in my lowerback area. I am always worried this might be a problem and im not sure if it is something to be felt while lifting. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Steve, hopefully what you feel is just the pump, just as your arms get tighter when training them, because of trapped blood flow in the muscles.
My lower back get`s tighter than a wound up spring, whenever I do heavy squats or deads...............sometimes I can barely stand straight until it dissipates!

yes thats the feeling i get. i feel a real tightness and firmness. of natural reaction i get worried because if something happenes to my back, that would be the end of me.
its not a "pain" in the essence of the word, but its an unusual feeling (although i have been having it for about 2-3 months now) like i stand up straight and i push a little pressure on my lower back and i feel tightness.
squats also ,lend themselved to some tightness, but not as much as deads

Chris, I had not even heard of the DRX9000 until after the operation and like Jade said, in theory it opens the space in between the vertibrae so the disc can get itself back into place.... from what I understand. I would have definatly looked into that before surgery. -------------------------------------
Jade, I am impressed how this turned out for you! Did you have any issues with L5/S1? I am no doc but it looks like that could turn into a problem at some point... this is coming from the many xrays I have seen of a so called "perfect" spine.

UJ, Very good point, I have never seen a "perfect spine" in my life, height, weight how fast you grew up, muscle flexability, muscle strength, there is so many varibles here to anyone having a perfect spine its incredible, oh sorry forgot child birth...

I wear all that plus ski goggles, shin guards, and shoulder pads!!! :Happy Spinner: no really though, I'm younger than most of you on here, so it's not as much of a problem for me yet...I still wear my belt during my entire backday (except sometimes during my last sets of front pulldowns) and leg day...i don't have knee or elbow wraps, but I imagine that i probably will someday...i wish that there were some sort of support wrap for shoulders, as mine already give me trouble

UJ, It has been just over a year since I did the DRX9000 therapy & today I feel great! Honestly, I would highly recommend trying it over surgery. BTW, I almost went the surgery route, it was that bad. My pain was just at "that freakin' point" and the entire game of pain killers & muscle relaxers just got old real quick. Just being honest. Jade ps No perfect spine here but I am lovin' life & living it to the fullest!

I hurt mine a few years ago, and it has never been the same ever since. I also got hip flexor tendonitis in my hip in high school, and it flares up in the winter REALLY bad when Chicago gets cold.
It is part of the reason why I am moving out of the midwest soon as I can.

Thought I would share this tidbit I found on T-nation by Stuart McGill PhD. Early morning workouts are a no no. The article advises one to wait several hours before engaging in any heavy back movements. No more squats and deads first thing in the morning. I know you can't believe everything you read so I present this info for your reading pleasure.
"As you know, you’re taller when you wake up in the morning than when you go to bed at night. This is because the discs are hydrophilic, that means they suck up water while you sleep and when there are no stresses present.
After rising, hydrostatic stresses of just walking around and using the muscles during the day compress your spine and the fluid is squeezed out, decreasing the anular tensions in the disc. So, when you wake up the extra height in the discs are analogous to a full water balloon ready to burst and if you bend, you build up much higher stresses in the disc. In fact, the stresses are three times higher than when you perform the same bend two or three hours later.
Now I’m not talking about getting up and going for a walk or perhaps a boxer going for a jog first thing in the morning. I’m talking about heavy bending exercises, like for example the good-morning exercise or doing sit-ups. Somehow people thought that this would be a good thing to do in the morning. It’s the worst possible thing you could do for the back first thing in the morning. I personally have a more favorite morning exercise, it’s what I like to call a "great-morning," but I don’t think my wife would appreciate me talking about it! Full spine bending first thing in the morning is a great way to damage your back—an unwise thing to do."
