Why I am stooopid by ChrisC
My back has been cusing me pain for about six months now, it got to the point where the only way i could sleep was curled upon the floor with a pillow, and even then i couldn't sleep long.
Last week, I went to a chiropractor and had a bunch of x-rays and diagnostic tests. turns out that what is wrong is relatively trivial (at least in the sense that are are far more bad things that can go wrong).
Here's why I am stupid: About two years ago, I was doing a warmup set of standing ooverhead presses. I wasn't really paying attention because the weight was light (read: instance #1 of stupidity). The barbell was at shoulder height and as i brought it down to my waist I felt a little tweak in the lower right side of my back. I didn't think anything of it for a couple of minutes but then it started hurting. A lot. My wife helped me hobble back to the car and I refused to go see anyone about it (instance #2 of stupidity). Two days later on a sunday morning I went to see one of those "now-care" docs (instance #3). He didn't think it was anything serious so I went home. A friend said I should apply heat to it (#4). So for the next couple of weeks i did that and walked around with a brace on my lower back. Eventually the pain reduce to a point such that I didn't notice it much. Fast forward 18 months and my back is really starting to hurt. Being the ididot i am, I didn't see anyone about it (#5). Pain kept getting worse and then I finally decided to go see someone about it (thanks UncleJesse). Which brings us back to last week. It is a problem with the SI joint caused by the earlier straining of the ligaments two years ago. The SI joint is now sitting in the wrong position causing the pain and impinging on the sciatic nerve.
Thankfully the chiropractor is fantastic and the icing on the cake is that he used to play for Nebraska so I get to chit-chat about my favorite team while he gets things fixed in my back (actually that was how I selected him - the same way I select any professional service - if they play for the Huskers they must be good ).
So I've been in a lot of pain for months with something that can be cleared up in 6-8 weeks. (#6)
Anyway, enough rambling. Just thought I'd share my back story.
And as Jade pointed out in an earlier thread - take care of your back people!
