Kidney stones a fairly common. They're jagged shards of calcium that are in the bladder and have to be forced out via urination. Sometimes they get so large that you can have a laser zap them to make the particles smaller, but you still have to urinate it out. I haven't had them before but everybody I know who has says it's one of the most painful things ever. Are we at higher risk because we consume so much more protein than most people? I read somewhere that he high protein, low carb diet is a bad idea for people with a genetic propensity for these stones.

I have had kidney stones, twice! They are absolutely the most painful thing that I have ever experienced in my life! Fortunately I haven't had any problems in several years. My wife however has had so many that we have lost count!
After my first one, that had to be zapped, I tried to find out what caused it in the first place. It turns out unfortunately that no one knows for sure. I live in the Ohio Valley region commonly known as the "stone belt". There's alot of minerals in our water here that apparently contribute to forming stones. There's more people with kidney stones in this region than anywhere else in the nation.
Since I'm on a typical bodybuilding diet and my wife is on a typical junk food average American diet I don't really know if it is dietary related.
The only advice that I have heard that can potentially prevent stones is to drink plenty of water and lemon is supposed to be helpful in breaking done stones before they can form.

as far as I know kidney stones can be caused by 2 things-excess excretion of calcium salts and also high intake of oxalates. For a bodybuilder on a high protein diet, this can be caused by increased leaching of calcium from the bones or from an abnormally high intake of calcium. As far as oxalates go,the main sources are beer, offal based meats, spinach and strawberries. My Dad has had 3 episodes of kidney stones and has been in the most excruciating pain,he has been told to lay off heavy beer and any offal based meats which in his case were the likely causes.

Ouch beckie I hope you're dad pulls through okay. Just thinking about how the shard is expelled makes me cringe. My Uncle has had these stones so I may have a genetic predisposition to get these later on in my life. I dont drink alot of beer anymore, but I do LOVE tomatoes and ketchup. I eat ketchup with almost everything, and that's on a daily basis. I know that Ketchup contains the oxalates you mentioned so I guess I may have to give it up. This sucks, what am I going to eat my scrambled eggs and omelettes with now?
