has anyone else had migraines and if so,what do you find helps? I have had 4 this year alone and they wipe me out for days at a time!

Oh..My...GOd! Beckie we have SO much in common! I had migraines for over 10 years. IT was almost a continuos cycle. I would get one, slowly start to subside, and then comoe right back. I would get 3-5 per week! Tried every med out there. Injections, inhalers, pills, herbals, shiatsu, therapy, etc...nothing helped. BUT...about 3 years ago, I had a problem with anemia, and had to go into the hospital for a few days. Transfusions, pain meds, etc. But after that incident...the migraines started to subside! I don't know why. I still get them, perhaps once or twice a month, but I'll live with that compared to what it was. I'm really sorry, because I know the pain and frustration they cause. I found a list of migraine meds in a magazine and showed it to my MD. We compared them with my records and found that I had tried every one onm the list! What keeps them in check right now is Toperol. It is a blood pressure med, but is also used for migraine. I also found Verapamil worked, but I think I grew a resistence to it after awhile. Anything I can do to help?

mine are usually hormone related but this one was totally out of the blue which took me by surprise. They gave me injections of Maxolon and Voltaren in my butt(ouch!) and that definitely helped. Sometimes I just can't tell the difference between a regular headache and a migraine because I don't get an aura so I don't want to take the meds if I don't need them..they gave me a tablet which has both maxolon and paracetamol and on the odd occasion I've taken ibuprofen which seems to knock it on the head.. That must have been awful getting that many...the worst part of it for me is the endless puking..not nice

Ouch! I do get the aura, and the pain, and nausea, and my vision gets a little blurry. What has been working lately, IF I feel it coming on, is Excedrin for Migraine. If I pop 2 of those as soon as I feel it, It helps a lot, but once it's on it's way, they normally don't help much. The Excedrin does irritate my somach a bit, so I do need to take it with food. I know....I give a GREAT massage...IF you visit...we can help each other out with our...ahem...problems! ;D

Hmmmm...I'll have to see what the active ingredient is...I left them in my other bag today..and I'm at work now. I'm normally pretty out of it for a day or two after I get one. Sorry that you have the depression afterwards! I got just the thing to bring you out of that depression..... ;D At least you would have a little less ...ahem...pressure anyways!

I started getting headaches about a year ago and the only thing that I can think of what changed is that I have been drinking more coffee (black) than ever b4. I cut it back and noticed less headaches over the past few months. Maybe caffiene is something contributing?

I don't actually drink coffee and I've cut right down on the Diet Coke-I think its just my hormones doing something funky

I had them so bad I had to go on a medication that I had to inject at the on-set of one..NOT FUN!!! I finally had my gyn doc switch birth control pills and like MAGIC they were gone and I have only had tension headaches which are generally caused by stress!! So I agree they can be hormonal to a certain degree...especially for us women!!!

So true Karrie-they are partly the reason I can't take ANY artificial hormones but then again I just have a 'sensitive' body.

The caffeine certainly has an effect. A co-worker has migraines, and what works for her is a few chocolate covered coffee beans! So I guess for some people, it works as a "good thing", and others not. I was like Karrie. Injections, everything. Nothing really worked. There is a surgeon here in Cleveland Ohio, experimenting with some type of surgery to relieve pressure somehow, in the eyebrow region?!? I'm not a physician, but some people are having success with it. It is still in a investigative stage. My brother gets migraines, and uses natural feverfew that he grows in his own backyard. It is mostly to try to keep them at bay, but once his start, they just run their course. I empathize with ya Beck!

I know this is an old thread but wanted to know of any follow up. My wife gets migranes. the severity can vary. Sometimes she can deal with them ( w/ help from the prescription meds) and sometimes she needs to got to the doctor for a shot to basically knock her out.
I can recall about 1/2 dozen times when I have taken her to the ER. As you guys know, the pain is immense and I feel very bad for her.
I know she does take b-6 100 mg and EPO??? daily. We have been thinking about having her do acupunture. I know her doc gave her new meds recently but I cannot recall the name.
Anyway, I feel for anyone who gets these damn things.

Beef, Is that Excerin as in over the counter? I know she cannot take Ibuprofen because of blood clot issues but I will ask her about this.

Yes, the Excedrin is over the counter. It is found where the Tylenol and Advil is. What type of clotting issues does your wife have??? Ibuprofen thins the blood.. Is her blood too thin to where she has a clotting deficiency??? Just curious. ;D Also, if she is on the birth control pill or any type of hormone this can make migraines much worse.

Migraines are caused by something, could be weather changes, diet, stress, hormones, etc. I suggest trying to find what triggers your migraines and work on correcting that. Taking pain meds and Rx meds doesn't fix the problem. It only covers it up. I also suggest taking the herb feverfew daily which can greatly reduce, if not eliminate, migraines. Liz
