For a change, instead of reviewing a certain dvd I thought I would review the major players in the dvd/vhs bodybuilding market.
My aim for these reviews is to inform the public in making smart choices and getting what we/you want for a dvd/vhs.
There are 5 major players in the dvd/vhs market they are as follows
1. IFBB videos
2. Mitsuri Okabe
3. GMV
4. Repetrope
5. muscletime
Each are a little differant and offer many differant styles of videos and DVD's. There is a wide selection out there to choose from when it comes to finding something you might be interested in.
1. IFBB videos-This is Magna Media, and basically they produce the Olympia videos shows and prejudging. Thats about it. Their production is good, but is also inconsistant from time to time. Some videos appear grainy and the colors are not always that great. When comparing say the 1995 OLympia to the 1996 Olympia, the picture quality of the 96 show is head and shoulders above the 95 contest. Likewise with the 2003 and 2004 videos, 2004 being of better quality.
All in all they are good dvd's and if you like watching contest you can't go wrong. Just don't expect the same picture quality every year.
2. Mits. If you've seen any of the BFTO videos then you know what to expect. His picture quality ranks very high, but his sound, particuliarly on his dvd's leave a lot to be desired. Each year Mits has changed his approach to the BFTO tapes, exploring more of the viewer may be interested in. At first (96,97) all we saw was training and some posing, then later we got into the pros cars and homes ect. Now we see more backstage interaction and photoshoots. His individual dvd's of athletes are done with the same quality. All in all Mits has set a high standard for bodybuilding tape/dvd production.
3.GMV. is an Australian based company who has followed the sport and basically archived as much as they possibly could. They tpae and record almost every event every year. They are responsable for many IFBB pro shows being recorded, such as the IRonman, San Fran, and European grand prix. They always include prejudging in their tapes so they are a little more economical then IFBB videos. Also, there much more experianced in filming pro shows, so they get closer shots and know how to move the camera around for better shots. In some cases, the Euro grand prix after the Olympia is more enjoyable to watch then the Olympia itself. They also film FIBO every year, and a variety of other stuff that may interest you. Profile dvd's of stars like Lee Preist, Ahmed Haider, and Tommie Thorvildson, and tons of other people. But don't lool for workout videos that are produced by them. They mainly highlight an athletes career and some posing stuff. There editing is good and their production value is high.
One makes them stand out is their extensive (the most extensive) collection of tapes they offer. You can get almost every Mr. Olympia and Nabba show from them. Not mention hundreds of seminar tapes from Tom Platz to Jeff King and Rich Gaspari.
4. Reptrope. These guys are like the US version of GMV. They film all the big NPC shows. I don't care for their backstage posing stuff, because its a little strange. Its not gay, but it sort of is. But their contest coverage is awesome. Their picture quality is always fantastic. They are by far the best producers of contest videos on the market today. Prejudging and contest footage is great. Editing is also great, and they know how to film a contest so you don't miss a beat of action.
5. Muscletime. The new kid on the block. They have put out a total of 6 dvd's. Two are a collection of videos (ala BFTO types) and 4 are athletes profiled in their Titans series. Being new, they are getting better. Thier first dvd, had sound, editing, and picture quality problems, but they have since rectified those and they are getting better all the time.
Well there you have it. Most DVD's cost about 40.00 a pop, but ome companies offer discounts for multiple orders.
Feel free to pm any questions or ask on this thread to help make your choice an easier one.
