Dorian Yates
“Blood and Guts, Special edition”
Special features provided by GMV
GMV and Dorian Yates worked together to spice the most important bodybuilding dvd ever made. In 1996 Dorian Yates released the ground breaking video “Blood and Guts.” This hardcore video features, a now famous, fly on the wall look at the then current Mr. Olympia’s off season training. This along with other reasons, led the way to revolutionize the bodybuilding video industry.
Dorian was and is a genius. He had watched other bodybuilders training videos, and they all left him uninspired. All of these videos were filmed with the perspective of how to assist the viewer in developing a champion physique. Other videos that were released showed lackluster training and filmed like an MTV video rather then hardcore training. Dorian being the trend setter that he was, enlisted the aid of Kevin Horton, a friend and fellow Brit, to video Dorian in black and white, with no special lighting, or retakes, or fake weights. This was legitimate training footage. What also made this video special was no music was added over the training footage. You simply got the chance to watch Dorian train. The other reason for the video being innovated was the training intensity. Dorian showed off his legendary training intensity.
Since Dorian’s release many other champions followed with their own version of blood and guts and I would speculate Mits BFTO’s was also inspired by Dorian’s video.
So this new special edition of Dorian’s video is in dvd format with chapters showcasing his training routine. Its been re-mastered with better video and sound clarity. So the 4 day routine of the now famous Chest and Bi’s, Legs, Back, and Delts and tri’s is still intact, but is better to watch. If you have this video this upgrade will be rewarding but its not worth the price alone. Thankfully GMV have added several reasons to buy this special edition.
The added features a biography of Dorian and a historical contest listing, a neat Dorian Yates Approved commercial, a photo gallery featuring over 100 photos (some I have never seen before), and some awesome contest footage from the 1994 English Grand Prix. The contest footage alone is worth purchasing the dvd again. It shows all aspects of the contest featuring Dorian, from symmetry comparisons through the muscularity comparisons, solo posing and posedown and winners announcement. The British grand prix which were always held a week or so after the Olympia, almost always filmed with better then the Mr. Olympia itself. And it featured competitors the Olympia did not.
I would have liked GMV to have included more Dorian footage, but in case your wondering there are several videos they have in the library featuring Dorian. So if you’re a die hard Dorian fan like me, you want to check out the famous FIBO footage of Dorian guest posing with Dillet, Wheeler, Leverone, Cormier and Victor Richards. Other great videos featuring Dorian are the 1996 English Grand prix, and my favorite is a tribute they gave Dorian on one of their videos “Men of Muscle #6” (I think). Dorian talks about his retirement and his tricep injury in a 1998 FIBO interview, which is highlighted with video footage of Dorian guest posing in England at what looks like a bodyweight of around 265-275 range. Showing what type of additional mass he could have carried if he wanted to do so.
All in all this new special edition is worth getting and upgrading your collection. If you already have the VHS version then you need a reason to get this. I thoroughly enjoyed the upgrade.
