Raising the Bar - David Pulcinella
a documentary about the life of bodybuilding
This is a different type of bodybuilding DVD. I've seen many where it's just top pros working out which don't get me wrong is very motivating and fun. This DVDS however show's a local amateur from Delaware of all places and he, his girlfriend, and his training partner diet down for a local competition
The dvds begins with a flashback of David and how he got into bodybuilding and all the contests he's been in. The biggest was his sweep of the Delaware and East coast titles making him the "king of Delaware". Turning 40 he decides he wants to do it one more time and defend his title. So our journey begins with David twenty weeks out prepping for the shows. We also get to see his girlfriend Jenn who does figure diet and prep also which is a nice eye opener for many who do not know how hard it is for these ladies. They diet just as hard as us!
David is not young by any means as he’s just about to turn forty and when telling friends and family of his decision to do the Delaware again. What is interesting is most of the time when telling friends you’re doing a bodybuilding show you get a lot of praise, but he is given more of a negative feedback. His parents and some of his gym friends are asking why he is doing it again since he already won the show the previous year. His parents, especially his mother hates the bodybuilding lifestyle. Funny, my mom said the same thing but I LOVE IT! Anyway, the camera follows David through all his workouts, eating, and his emotions while dieting.
Jenn, now she has done well in the past taking 2nd at the bodyrock (a big local national qualifier near my home). She wants to win the overall figure title and qualify for nationals in hope to go pro someday. She is young 24 so there is a lot of promise for her. The documentary shows her emotional state while dieing, how hard their routines CAN be, and many other crazy things.
The day has come and David and Jenn are ready for competition. Did you know they spend HOURS putting on protan the night before? Its nuts! Anyway, the show is near and then… SHEET happens! Apparently David isn’t allowed to compete because since he won the shows he’s already qualified for nationals and the NPC rules states he isn’t allowed to compete in the same show he’s won. Man, how crappy is that, 20 weeks of dieting to be TOLD on game day you can’t play. Personally, I’d snap but David took it pretty well. He’s not happy as he shouldn’t be and Jenn isn’t either. However, Jenn’s posing trainer Tracey Greenwood a fitness pro gets Jim Manion on the line and they “BEND” the rules a bit and let David compete in the East Coast.
What I enjoyed very much about this documentary is how well the camera work is done. Sometimes I forget it there and when the interviews are on it seems as if they are actually talking to you. The montages are done well and no holds bar approach is great. Do take into account this dvd is 2 years old but the story and the trials David and Jenn go through doesn’t change. This is a great dvd that you should see.
Here is the trailer to it.
