Battle for the Olympia XI 2006 edition.
A Mitsuru Okabe production.
Part 2 of the review.
Lets pick up where we left off. Disc 2
Troy Alves-Back and posing.
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. Sorry Troy but your workout, which consisted of lat pulldowns, deadlifts on a smith machine, shrugs, and v-handle pulldowns, was both slow and uneventful. Perhaps Troy’s diet was just too low in carbs, perhaps he was tired, not sure, but what I do know is that I’ll skip this segment every time. Troy looked ok posing but nothing like he looked when he first appeared on BFTO 3 years ago.
Jay Cutler-2 years ago Jay weighed in at 280 lbs on the bfto, and trained back. This time he weighs in at 289, and is super conditioned. Ripped, Big, Round! He does the following exercises: Underhanded pulldowns (the stack plus 25lbs), deadlifts (405 lbs), One arm rows, T-bar rows (8 plates), Reverse grip bent rows (315), cable rows (stack plus 45 lbs), and straight arm pulldowns. Then he poses. I have never seen Jay look this good. Rounder and more aesthetic then ever before. The extra weight really made him look better. His thighs have awesome sweep, and his back is more detailed then ever before. I mean WOW! His most muscular crab is awesome and can compete with anyone’s!
Dave Henry-DC training (Doggcrap). Biceps and Back. Yup he trains biceps before back. One arm alternating dumbbell curls, followed by drag curls (250lbs). Hammer pulldowns with 6-45lbs plates and one 35 lbs plate PER SIDE!!! This dude is super strong. Chins, dear lord in heaven I have never seen a back like this before!
Dave trains hard and heavy and looks awesome. Freaky muscle. If he was 5’10” and weighed 100 more pounds, he would crush everyone. He is truly a giant killer and looks a lot like a mini Ronnie Colemen. No one, and I mean no one, not Branch, not Jay, not Ronnie, not Dexter, has better muscle definition then Dave. Awesome!!!
Tony Freeman- BIG. Back and shoulders. As we get closer to the show the athletes train lighter and lighter. Tony performs the following: pulldowns, cable rows, t-bars, close grip pulldowns, shrugs, military presses, side laterals. All performed with light way and lots of iso tension, and static holds. He is big, but needs to be bigger and fuller. Aesthetically pleasing and truly dedicated, the best is yet to come for Tony.
Dennis James-Chest and posing. Dennis talks a lot about his new deal which has him living in Kuwait! Very lucrative and a way to actually teach bodybuilding to the middle east community. He performs Dumbbell presses, incline smith machine presses (315), machine flys, cable cross overs and pec decs. He speaks about going lighter then usual, and since I have seen all the BFTO’s I was a little disappointed that he did. Dennis is super strong and sometimes we really look forward to seeing that. But Hey I understand, he still looked awesome. He also mentioned that he wants to hear “Dennis looked his very best” after the show and not before the show. I hear you Dennis, you get freaky ripped and are always insanely large!
Gunter- Chest and delts. Gunter does smith machine bench presses both incline and flat, machine flys, side laterals, front and rear raises. He looks more streamlined with a better taper, but not as ripped as last year.
Ronny Rockel-one day before the O, training chest and back. Ronny is a little on the small side, but shows really good conditioning and muscle shape. He does hammer presses, cable crossovers, hammer pulldowns, and t-bar rows. He has awesome leg development, and looks good.
Dennis Wolf-one day after the O. Dennis trains back and triceps. He performs pulldowns, hammer strength pulldowns, one arm rows, and bent rows. Then some tricep work.
Dennis is an awesome bodybuilder. Truly amazing. He is a little flat which maybe a result of the extensive contest schedule and traveling he did leading up to the show. He shows great and I truly mean great potential. His arms, shoulders, chest and upper back are world class. His legs are on par with the best of them. His back lat spread s wicked!!!!
Dennis’ frame is big and shows great potential. He will soon be a top tier pro, and we maybe looking at a future Mr. Olympia!
The bonus disc is a little long, but has some neat extras.
We see bonus features of some of the athletes doing routine things like picking up their dogs from the groomers (Johnnie Jackson), and eating out (Dexter Jackson).
We also see what its like for Mits to film the BFTO as he films himself traveling all around the USA filming the athletes. There is a segment with Milos Scarcev and another Japanese pro training (very intensely), and a neat segment filmed in NYC with Chris Cormier, talking about his recent health problems.
All in all it’s a good BFTO. You certainly get your money’s worth for sure with well over 7 hours of footage for $39.95. But I do think the segments are getting too long. And filming too close to show, means less intense workout for some.
