Jay Cutler From Jay to Z
Review by Steve Buccilli aka 1400total
Lets get right to the review of Jay’s new dvd. All of Jay’s DVD’s have shown more and more of Jay’s life, but this one goes further then all the rest. It show’s his new house and what and how he plans on furnishing it. You travel with him to the Ironman Expo and watch as he mingles with fans, and gives a seminar. We also see him travel to Columbus for the Arnold Classic, mingling with his fellow muscletech athletes as well as fans. We see hi guest pose at the Jr California for Lonnie Tepers contest, and you see him train at the famous Golds gym, as well a workout at the Venice beach PIT. At over 6 hours long this 2 dvd set really gets into the nitty gritty of Jay’s life. He spends time at his Venice beach maxmuscle store (with co owner Dave Bourlet), and how he spends time with his dogs relaxing. There is plenty of hardcore training too. He weighs 295lbs and is has striations in various bodyparts (like calves), yet is looking extremely huge in the process.
But now I would like to take a few minutes of your time explaining why I like this dvd so much and why I have become such a fan of Jay Cutler.
I first met Jay Cutler at the 1998 Arnold Classic Expo. I remember I how he impressed me in two ways, one for the size of his arms, and the other was overhearing a conversation he had with Lee Apperson regarding his financial endeavors outside the sport. I recall him saying something along the lines that he is investing in real estate and could walk away from the sport at anytime and yet still be financially sound. At the time I didn’t know if his commitment was in question for this sport, or if he was just that smart and well rounded. Years later I realized, he is just that smart. This is extremely evident in this dvd. Jay enjoys the life he has built for himself and you learn that it has not all come from bodybuilding. However Jay knows and understands the importance of being a good ambassador. Let me give you some examples. At the Ironman Expo he stands on the fan side of his table, never sitting, only standing, as he gives away his signed photos, and takes tons of pics with his fan. He goes out of his way to make each and every fan feel comfortable. One fan complains about his fast metabolism and how he can’t put on weight. Jay begins to ask question regarding why, and that this guy needs to force feed himself, and that Jay himself eats up to 10 times a day. I have seen many pro’s and many of them wouldn’t give a fan the time a day, let alone engage them in conversation.
We also see Jay shaking hands with each and every amateur competitor at the JR California back stage. Then when he goes to the Arnold (dressed in a very expensive suit) he shakes the hand of every pro athlete. He takes time to congratulate Silvio on his performance, as well as taking time to talk to Phil Heath about his feelings from the show. He gives out pointers and advice to everyone. There is a scene in the dvd in which he gives some of his clothes to Darrem Charles because the airline lost Darrem’s luggage (the shirt literally hangs off of Darrem).
In this way Jay is doing more for the sport then any other Mr. Olympia has done before him. Many, like Dorian and Ronnie, raised the bar of what a professional bodybuilder should look like. But none since Arnold have gone out of their way to help not only the fans, but other pro’s. Remember how Arnold would hang out with Zane, Columbo, and Corney? Well Jay does the same thing with the newer pro’s, almost taking them under his wing and advising them on how to become better. So not only is his physique raising the bar, but he raises the bar by helping other pros to succeed in various other ways.
When asked “who is the most hardcore bodybuilder” you may reply Branch Warren, or amateur Dave Pulcinella, and if asked “who the most professional bodybuilder is” you may reply Shawn Ray, or Gunter. But I am here to tell you that Jay is the epitome of professional bodybuilding. He trains and diets as hard if not harder then anyone I have ever witnessed. Combining the discipline and knowledge of Zane and Gaspari, with the gut wrenching intense workouts of Warren, Platz and Coleman. He truly sets the standard for what this sport is all about, and this dvd shows us.
Truly inspirational.
