Forever I have wanted to press the 100 lb db's. When I first joined a gym in 2000 the owner was showing me around and made a point of showing me that the DB's "only" went up to 100's to "keep the goons out". At the time I thought that was funny - who could lift those beasts? Wouldn't they BE the goons?
Anyway, I trained there for 6 years, and my strength improved, and it eventually reached a point where I could row the 100's. I was so happy! I was (kinda) a goon!
Of course, I couldn't press them. Only a handful of the members there could. But I wanted to so badly. I got to the point where I could press the 90's, but then I got my home gym and started to train there exclusively.
Because of budget issues, I did not get DB's at first, then when I did it was just a pair of handles with screw collars. That was good for 5 lbs - 85 lbs (95 if I squished 5's on the end). But my strength continued to grow and I started having to do DB exercises second because 85 lbs was too light when I was fresh. I KNEW I could press the 100's, if only I had some!
Well. TODAY I FINALLY PRESSED THE 100's!!!!!!!!!! FOR 5 REPS!!!
I waited a long time to be a self-proclaimed goon.
Now I need to press those damn 120's.
Then I'll really be a goon.

Always feels good to go up on the DB's doesn't it? I remember when I used to look at the racks at my gym....10-40, 45-90,95-125's....Each time I would get stronger I would just look at the next section of the rack and imagine "one day I will press those. As I got stronger, I moved to gyms with bigger DB's, so no matter what strength I was, it always seemed that there was ONE MORE rack to go. Currently, I'm pressing 130's on a good strong (non-dieting!) day. That's the beginning of the last rack at the Gold's I go to. It ends at 150's. I too, also wanted to be a GOON!!! I've had that same line used on me too. However, now I am a goon, and you can be too Rich!

Thanks guys. It was a big moment!
YB, I know what you mean. Every time I get to a place that I used to think was huge, it doesn't look so huge anymore. I still remember how "big" 2 plates/side looked on the bench press. Then when I got there, those 2 plates just looked lonely on the bar. Like they need 3 to be complete.
Anyway, that's why I bought db's all the way to 120. I need to SEE them when I train. Now when I go downstairs to my gym, those 120's taunt me.
But I WILL get them.

That's some serious weight Rich, congrats! I like your story about you and the first gym you joined... reminds me my own experience! By the way, last week I found one of my first training logs (more than 10 years old). I must say that it truly feels great to see the improvements we've made! I had a "PR" for bench press: 35lbs each side (I remember the feeling "Hey It's almost a huge plate of 45!!! ) for 12 reps!

The fun part about working out in a gym, is when you actually pick up the big DB's and everyone stops with the reactions on their faces saying "Hold it....someone didn't actually pick those up, but they're actually going to USE them for something other than shrugs?!?!?! I gotta stop and watch this!!!" ;D

Another major milestone this past Friday.
I bench pressed 275 lbs for 4 reps!!
When I first started training, that was another thing I would just look on in awe at. When a guy got under the bar with 225 lbsm I'd notice and be impressed. When a guy got under the bar with 275 lbs, I'd stop and watch! I used to think that if only I had started lifting in my teens instead of my 30's, I'd have had a chance at getting that strong.
Now I am!
My goon-dom knows no bounds.
Now .... when a guy would get under the bar with 315, I'd stop, watch, and bow!!!!
That is the next milestone. Can't wait!

Thanks Vince! And thanks for the e-mail That was seriously cool! A few small corrections though ... (if I may) The original post was a bit outdated ... I have actually since pressed the 105's for 6. However I added to the thread a few days ago (which is why it bumped up) that I ALSO just reached a longtime goal of bench pressing 275 for 4. Also, sadly, I am not a champion bodybuilder .... but I did take 3rd in the novice division of a show once! And finally .... Matryx is a girl But she's buff!!

Rich Sorry My Friend I noticed that it was dated may 2008!!!! I wrote the article to inspire some of my Clients Especially College Football Players.105s for 6 Wow Thats Impressive!!! 275 for 5 That is also Commendable!!!!Especially now in Powerlifting with Bench Shirts that add 200lb to a bench press. Some of the Champion Benchers with shirts probably could not do what you did without a Bench Shirt!!! I still feel You Are a Champion Bodybuilder ,However.Anybody That has The Discipline and Conditioning to get up on Stage is A CHAMPION!!!!! Placing is irrelevant in My mind. Congratulations Rich and Thank You For being a part of my newsletter and Thank You for Inspiring My Clients!!!! #bbravosmiley8hh# #bbravosmiley8hh# And Please tell Matryx her Uncle Vin Dog is Sorry!!!
