I know powerlifters use this exercise to help practice with their lockouts on benchpress.
For bodybuilders...what is the purpose of this exercise?

In my experience, floor presses with a close grip was probably the best tricep builder ( both size and strength ) for me then any othr exercise. Never got the same results with a full range close grip bench.
I never tried floor presses with a meduim or wide grip so don;t know how they would have benefited me.

Floor presses are great for that sticking point and lockout strength. They are also a huge tricep builder. Done with a regular bench press grip, you will notice your bench numbers increase.

I dont think they have a benchmark purpose for bodybuilding simply because the ROM is partial. I do feel, however, that they are an awesome assistance exercise to boost your bench press, which will in turn help you press more and build more muscle.

Frank... if I want to pretend that I am a powerlifter, I rather just eat as much as I can in a pizzeria Seriously, I would say that floor press (or any partial press) can improve strength which is not a bad thing even for a bodybuilder during some training cycles! But if we talk pure hypertrophy, I would only use it with a close grip for the triceps as Grant mentioned!

The added size to my tricepts was great. I did not see much help with the bench but it did help my OHP a lot.
