Guys, I am having a hard time with my routine. Here is my situation:
I have been doing a 5x5/CrossFit hybrid routine for about 8 weeks now. I notice my strength has increased and i feel somewhat stronger then ever. My issue is that i visually, do not look as good as i used to. What gives? Ive lost all my definition (the little that i had) in my arms, chest, legs etc. My parents noticed it, my girlfriend noticed it and even my friends notice it. I get the comments "do you still workout?" more so now then ever.
I am at a loss of what to do. I was thinking about switching it back up to a bodybuilding type of program, but i am still confused.
Any input?

Has your weight changed? The "now more than ever" statement tips me off to say that maybe you are now overtraining.. I know alot of people can handle a higher volume, but some of us cannot. Just a thought.. Hows the diet been?

My diet has been OK. Not strict and not bad. I just eat and eat. I guess i was focusing too much on strength development and ignored the "sculpting" part of working out.

"I just eat and eat..." you look softer but no weight gain?

I look softer, but look bigger as well. My neck and traps are relatively large, but i have no more cut from shoulder to bicep anymore. and my arms are no where as tight as they used to be. I gained STRENGTH in every thing, but i lost the development? maybe im wording it wrong

But you haven't answered the weight gain issue. Sounds like you're bulking and have gained some bodyfat in addition to muscle?

Steve, without seeing you I guessing that you are over trained like Randy said. I know I personally cannot handle high volume training without losing size. I really do not believe that there is any specific exercises that will "sculpt" definition. Be nice if there were, I wouldn't have to diet! lol

Guys, I'll bring a different point of view here.
Steve, correct me if I'm wrong, but you don't train to failure right? So when training short to failure and having a schedule which include 3 days/week of "5x5", 2 days/week of "Crossfit" and 2 days/week "off" I'm pretty sure it's not overtraining. In fact, it's hard to say since I don't know a lot about you and your nutrition plan, but it doesn't look like overtraining to me.
To make a long story short, to be overtraining you must be more than extreme with these 3 different aspects:
- Volume (sets and days of training/week) - Intensity - Nutrition
So in my opinion, there is three possibilities:
1- Your body type doesn't respond very well to this kind of training! Some would gain some mass with it, but maybe it's not for you. Maybe you have more slow twitch muscle fiber so 5 reps is not what you need
2- Maybe you THINK that you didn't change your diet... but in fact you DID! When you do not take notes of what you eat, you can eat a lot less (or lot more) without noticing it... in fact that's the case of the majority of my clients!
3- A combination of #1 and #2
Hope it helps
Mo

Thats a great point Mo. I didn't even think that maybe this type of training is not something my body responds too. I wouldn't consider myself as over trained because i do not train to failure, and i eat quite a lot (even tho i don't write it down, i know i eat a good amount)
I am thinking of jumping back on the MaxOT program because that has worked well for me in the past. Currently, I am looking at doing their 6-Month Roadmap that they have int he back of the book.
From what I understand, Joel is living proof the MaxOT program works. Any tips?

Gave you my 2 cents in the PM's, but I will just say to follow the Max Ot 6 month program with the nutrition changes we spoke about. Do it with all you have, every set, every rep. Beat the log book any time possible. Add in the cardio.... There ya go, BAM, fool proof

I can't really add to anything Randy just said. Mo has a good point also. Which reminds me of something Dorian Yates used to say, a lot of people are over trained in sets and reps but under trained in intensity. I guess thats why we all agree on one thing for sure, give it all you got on each set and don't hold anything back!
