Good for you, Steve. Bet you ace both parts. Go for it, and keep us posted. It's a difficult but rewarding profession.

Its a wierd feeling. Im excited and nervous (about becomnig a firefighter in general) Its very dangerous, but I feel the accomplishment and satisfaction you recieve from it, is not something every job can offer. And i feel thats what I need. A desk job isnt satisfying for me. Financially it is okie, but mentally i feel im missing something. And i dont want to do something where my heart is not at.
I know alot of people, especially family and parents, are going to discourage me from doing this. thats the hardest part. I went to college, graduated and im going in like a 180 from what I set out to do. I dont want my father to feel as if he wasted money on college. convincing and letting my family know is going to be the hardest part of this journey

It sounds like a great challenge, congrats Steve! And dont worry, i'm sure your parents will understand your decision and will soon be very proud of what their son is achieving! It may sound tough, but if they dont understand, to bad for them... there is more than money in life... so it's great to know you do what you feel is the best for YOU. Enjoy...

Good luck Steve........a worthy occupation and one that I know I couldn`t perform!!
A firemans job has got to be one of the toughest gigs out there......thank God to those who rise to the occasion on a daily basis and save lives and property. #bowdown3ht#

Good luck. As a parent myself we only want our kids to be happy and successful. So don't worry about your family. I'm sure they will be fine with your decision. You chose a tough road. In a big city like NY I'm sure you will be challenged, but hey at least you will have a lot of time to train. LOL

Keeping my fingers crossed, Steve. Firefighting is a noble and selfless profession. As the 5th anniversary of 9/11 approaches, that is brought home even more.
Much luck and keep us posted!

Out here, you can't even be a firefighter without being pre-med...most of the calls that occur out here are medical calls, so you basically have to be a firefighter and a paramedic too. Best of luck!!!

Good Luck Steve!! I was a volunteer fireman for 10 years before i had to give it up do to lack of time. got married and had a family and didnt have the time to keep my training up. I miss it terribly. One word of advice my friend, if and when you become a fireman dont get to co*ky and think that you know fire. It will happen believe me it will. Always remember that fire can be unpredictable. I got co*ky and it almost bit me in the ass in a house fire. Dont mean/want to scare ya just keep your head on a swivel during a fire and never think its just a routine fire...GOOD LUCK BRO!!!!

Thanks alot everyone. I got my books and Im gonna start studying next week after my vacation.
Hoopie, I hope I dont become co*ky. Last thing I need is to be bitten in the ass because I thought I knew the fire! So I spoke to my father about this yesterday, and suprisingly, he wasn't totally against it. I had originally thought he would rule it out completely and ostracize me from the family lol. He understood but at the same time was dissapointed because he feels I could do better. I told him this is better for me. Ill be doing something I love and enjoy and at the same time, making a difference. Where as at my desk job, I wouldnt be making any difference.
Atleast now that I have my college degree, after 5 years I can take advancement tests to become Lieutenant, Chief, or Battalion Chief
