There are many reasons I do what I do. Number 1 - HEALTH. That's how I got into it. I wanted to be healthier. Why do I compete and go 12, 15, 20 weeks without eating "bad" foods? Because when i decide to do something I do it to be THE BEST. That makes me happy, just like Randy said! I've always been very intrinsically driven. Also, somewhat obesessive. It runs in my family. My father is a recovering alcoholic and continues to smoke. I chose to obsess about healthy things. Do I starve myself year round - NO WAY! I enjoy life. I realize that when I start a diet it's usually 4 months, then if I want to, i can eat anything I want. Do I? On occassion, but not usually because I value my health! When I'm done w/ a competition diet I will enjoy a beer, some wings, cheese burger, etc... Will I eat this stuff everyday or even every week? No. If I want some wings and a beer in the off season will I get them? YES! It is about balance. I think the people that can balance the things they enjoy with other aspects of their lives are the ones that become most successful and live happy and enjoyable lives. Those that cannot balance are the ones that struggle w/ happiness and in keeping positive relationships with other people and things.

I am also a big believer in that the more self inflicted tourcher one can endure due to a strict diet and a hardcore weight traing regimine, the easier it is for that person to handle stresses of the outside world.

Chan and I were talking the other day and we both decided that we were SMART MEATHEADS! How's that for oxy moron? And maybe that's why we do what we do cuz we are MORON's, but if being bodybuilder means being a moron, than I don't mind being a moron, cuz I LOVE THIS GAME!

What a great thread! I agree with everything thats been said by you guys! Why do I train and diet like I do? Because I DON'T WANT TO BE NORMAL! Anyone can stuff their face with junk food! Do they seem particularly happy to you?
Most people are always complaining about feeling so bad and having no energy! It drives me nuts to hear people younger than me talking about how old and broken down that their getting!
As far as extreme diets go its only for a few months and then it dosn't have to be that strict.
I'm with Tim, when I'm in my 70's I'm planning on lookin good! I want to be that old dude over at the squat rack doing reps with 405lbs!
Am I OCD? YES I AM!!!! LOL

I like the "Why Be Normal" answers.
All I know is ever since high school I wanted to be big. I bought my first bodybuilding magazines at 15 and knew thats what I wanted to be. It was not about getting girls or competeing for sports, it was about being big.
Like Tim, I abused alcohol for over 14 years, wondering why I could not gain size like I wanted. Even placing in a small local show in 88 did not make things click in my head what was wrong. Well in time I sobered up and needed a new outlet, and my old friend/enemy the gym called me- hows that for dysfunctional.
For me now, it's not just a matter of being big, it's the friends I've made in the gym, the sense of accomplishing something, more than a bit of "bigorexia" and having a stress outlet for my high stress, deadline driven job.
Finally It's about my health. 4 years ago this month I was released from care for cancer. The Non- Hodgkins was caught early but the treament seriously f'ed up my body. I'm now borderline insuline resistant and still have visible lipodystrophy that so far only rigorous weight training with cardio and a strict diet seems to be able to effect. Bodybuilding gives a sense of doing something to affect change.
Now I'm looking at competition. A buddy of mine in the NY area had health probs far worse than mine and he not only competes, but wins. If he can, so can I.
For me, thats why.

AWWWWWWWWWWWW Tim, you know as well as I that it's just a matter of suiting up and showing up and doing the next indicated right thing. In my case something has always told me that this is what I AM and I just needed to commit to myself the steps required to get there.
My new AA sponsor groans and moans about having to bulk (he placed third in middleweight at the Red River Classic). To me it's another challenge to see what I can make my body do. Trainer Tom never tells me poundages when he racks my plates, feeling that numbers are self limiting and you can actually psyche yourself out by being fixated on a number. So he never tells me the pounds lifted till after the last set. "Your job is to lift with the best form possible, mine is to track progress" and "the body is far stronger than the mind imagines it to be. Listen to your body when lifting, not your mind and great things can happen"

Love this thread. I've got more to add. The other day I was leaving my mom and dad's house. They have a long drive way. I was on my way to the gym. My dad was pulling in as I was driving out and he stopped and we talked. Now, the night before I had been sitting on a chair at their computer w/ just shorts on. As I was driving out my dad says to me, "God Kyle, you have done amazing things with your body. I just was in awe last night when you were at the computer." He was going on and on and I felt my self blushing and almost feeling uncomfortable. Now, my pops and I are best friends. Making him proud is the world to me! If he had been telling me how great a baseball player I was and how I"ve done such an amzing job I'd be lapping it up! However, I almost felt embarassed about what he was saying, in a good way, but it made me realize something. Those compliments were so humbling and compelling. It made me realize that I do this for ME. I don't do it to make my dad proud. Am I glad he is HELL YES. I don't do it to get compliments. Do they make me feel good? Damn right. Does looking good make me feel good? Of course. But...all that aside, I bodybuild because it makes me happy. I enjoy EVERYTHING about it - even feeling miserable a week out w/ no energy. Why? I guess one reason is because I know it's ALL ME. It's on me TO PUT EVERYTHING TO WORK! I love that responsibility. I love the intensity. I love the drive it takes. I love the dedication. I LOVE THE CONSISTENCY! I love knowing I'm doing something that basically NO ONE in teh world can do and not only that, doing it well! I get such gratification from it. Most of my life is spent helping others. I get more joy out of that than anything, but this one thing, bodybuilding, is for me. It's not for my wife. It's not for my dad. It's damn s ure not for trophies - although they are cool too. It's about all the things I just typed above. After that moment, I all of a sudden had a different respect for myself. Almost like I did something life changing! I knew all these years I bodybuild for myself, but this one occurance a few days ago put it on another level of self-understanding! Here is what bodybuilding gives me and what I love about it: RESPONSIBILITY, CONTROL, DEDICATION, DETERMINATION, ATTITUDE, INTENSITY, DRIVE, CONSISTENCY and much much more.

BRAVO TIM!
Yesterday I felt like crap. Head cold coming on. LONG day at work. Was cold outside and raining like crazy.
My wife picked me up from work so we could go to the gym. I whined to her, " Can't we just take a day off? I feel like crap. Let's go home and just order a pizza!"
You know what she told me? "Baby, I thought YOU told me there ARE no excuses?" But if you want to go home, I'll drop you off, and I'M going to the gym!"
Now I was not only embarrassed at sounding like a wimp, but intimidated enough to go anyways!
When we got to the gym (a normally very busy time/night), it was pretty much empty due to the weather. I thought, " Bunch of wimps, can't even go out in a little rain!"
Did I feel like going? HELL NO! Did I go? HELL YES...there are no excuses!
BY the way....now I remembered why I love this woman and married her 29 years ago!

For me, I don't see a need to be strict. I've dieted, had my bodyfat measured a 5.7% while still eating pretty much like a normal person. Instead of having a cheat day, which I used to do once a week, I'll have that food in lesser amounts during the day. I'm active at my job, so I do burn it off pretty easily. Some others are not afforded that opportunity, so I take advantage of it. I just want to be in the best shape I can. That way when I'm Tim's age, I can still take care of the people that are my current age!!! ;D
