On a Serious note.My Father smoked 3 paks of Camels per day at one time.He developed Heart problems and had to quit.He then died of Cancer!!! My uncles on my Mothetrs side(5) all had Great Genetic Potential. My one uncle was 6ft 3in 270 lb and had very little bodyfat and was built like a Bodybuilder!!!He actually never worked out but had a moving business. He developed Lung Cancer,as he smoked most of his life.He lost almost 100 lb and went from a Physical Specimen to a person who l.ooked like a Concentration Camp Victim!!!!(I believe he smoke LUCKY STRIKES)My Father and Uncles all died very painful deaths. The doctors evaluation was that their Cancer was Tobaco related!!!I used to date a girl who never smoked but worked in an office where they did .She died of Lung cancer Secondary Smoker related!!!

All kinds, all from second hand smoke. Actually, it's the stench coming off my patients as they struggle to speak and can only get 3 words into a sentence. Gasping for air until I paralyze them and pass a hard plastic tube into their trachea. I'm all for smoking; it's job security for me... just make sure your health insurance is paid up so I can collect on my bill.

I watched my grandmother, literally watched, her die coughing up mucous from her lungs due to emphysema.

Great posts guys! But I think the only people that read them are the non-smokers. In my experience smokers couldn't care less about the horror stories. It's almost as though they believe it won't happen to them ... or maybe that they'll be able to quit before they're in serious trouble.

Steve You are correct most smokers who continue do not care!!! .People have the right to do anything whatever as long as they do not infringe on the rights of others!!!!Secondary smoke infringes on others right to breathe fresh air!!! I had to install a couple of air purifiers in my gym because the people in the apartment above my gym constasntly smoke!!I solved my problem!!!They have children however from infant to Preteen.I see them sitting in their apartment and car with the children, and infant sitting on their lap feeding the child a bottle with a Cig constantly in their mouth.Who now has their right violated?? #smileylame7qi#

My sincere condolences to everyone who has suffered with somebody with a smoking-related problem. This is something I see and deal with everyday. The day after my post above I had a 35 year old guy come into the ER, 1 pack a day smoker, 420 lbs and about 5 foot 5 inches tall (all fat), crash in front of me after about 2 hours of aggressive respiratory therapy. I had to intubate him and it was the worst airway I have ever had to deal with. His obesity was his major problem but the smoking severly compromised his lung function, leading to his decline. Two weeks ago I had to tell a 42 year old smoker, hard-working guy who was raising his 2 teenage kids alone, that I found a mass in his lungs on chest x-ray and needed to admit him to the hospital to define what type of cancer it was. 95% of the children I see with respiratory problems are exposed to second-hand smoke. I don't know how many times I've explained the association to parents even though they claim they don't smoke around the child (while they wreak of cigarettes and I can't stand being in the room with them because of the smell). I had asthma until I was about 10 years old. That was when we started learning that smoking was bad for you. My dad heard or read that, crumbled up his pack of cigs, threw them away, said that's it, and never smoked again. This was after smoking about 12 years, and he was a construction worker and everybody he worked with smoked (one of the many reasons I'm honored to have him as my father). My asthma went away after that. Smoking is one of the many things about our society that I just don't understand and is infuriating to me. It is such a money-driven and profitable industry that it unfortunately will never go away. So, I'll just keep blasting people with respiratory treatments, corticosteroids, and if they don't work, solve the problem with a hard plastic tube...

Who wants to live for ever anyways. True but I would prefer to die from old age in my sleep. I saw what my mom went through and I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
