Hi All,
I'm new to this group. I plan on competing in my 2nd NPC show next April. And for me nutrition is the place where I need help. I was working w/a trainer this past month. He was great but for some unforeseen circumstance he is unable to train and help me with my nutrition. So I need help if anyone is willing. I kept reading about this Carb Cycling that Ski does and am interested. So interested that I located the story, printed it out and read it on the train twice. Now my confusion is can I a 5 feet, 117lbs girl w/21% BF start this now since the show is in April? Also, when can I start w/the 200grams then drop it the way its suggested?

I would start with a lower carb level. You have about 16 weeks to get into contest shape.

How low should I go? I've read the article and it looks like you should times 1.5 by your body weight which is 117 so this will give me 175g to start off with.

I train figure girls for shows-have a look at my website-I am currently training several girls for shows in April... I would need to see some pics and do a proper nutrition assessment on you-like how does your body react to carbs,do you gain/lose fat/muscle easily etc..it is not as simple as working out grams based on bodyweight.You need to factor in metabolism,training etc... Barbie,welcome to the board,glad to have you with us.
As far as carb cycling and my article,it works great for almost everryone that does it,but the article is just a template so people can see the general premise of how I recommend doing the cycling.....it must be tailored to the individual in question a bit here and there.
As Beckie said,metabolism,carb sensitivity,age,sex,energy expenditure,etc. etc. all come into play but it sounds more complicated than it really is.
If I were you,I would read about it in our nutrition section.it`s a long thread pinned at the top of the page and I`ll be glad to help you out in any way I can after you have read the thread to obtain more info and viewpoints on it.

Welcome to the board first off!! I used a carb cycle for my show with great results with the help of Tim(ski). Will be doing it again starting Dec 18th for my 2 shows in April. Also may incorporate The CKD diet at about 4-5 weeks out...

Hello Everyone, thank you all for welcoming me! I went thru the very long thread last ngiht but it was very good...lots of info to take in.... I guess for me is i'm not sure what number to start on the high carb days....i'm 5 ft, 117lbs, 21% body fat and there's someconfusion on when to take in a complex carb and simple carb....i don't want to overload my body w/simple carbs through out the day so is it safe for me to say the best time to eat them is right after a workout preferrably a heavy workout like leg days...also, i don't understand why bodybuilders and other competitors tend to stay away from dairy thru out their preeping but will eat cottage cheese....i'm still learning about my body since this will be my 2nd show...so i haven't found the right combination in the dieting part that works for my body...for me the lifting part and discipline is easy...its more the eating part that's hard also, too but the timing of what you eat is also hard for me....if you click on the link you will see some pics from this past April's show share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=8IZuHLlu2atEai'm number 7 and number 4 placed first in our class....i was 110lbs and about 8%bf but was retaining alot of water...

Welcome Barbie!!!!!
First of all, the folks here are great, and will help you in any way they can.
I am a male bodybuilder, but trained with the number 4 ranked figure competitor from the Olympia a few years ago. So I have gleaned a few ideas from her to share with you.
First: You look great in your pic's. Very good stage presence. That will take you a long way.
Second: Careful of symmetry. You have strong looking quads, which may overpower your overall lines. From your pic's, I think walking lunges and some plyometrics might help. Stay away from squats.
You asked about dairy. For me, as a bodybuilder, I drop ANY dairy a few weeks before contest. It tends to distend my abs.
Last suggestion: I trained with Mike Davies in Columbus Ohio for a bit. He trains most of the top figure and fitness competitiors at the Olympia, and when it comes to figure, is one of the best trainers out there (my opinion). He has a pretty good website, and offers a few training and posing DVD's for figure that may be beneficial. Type in Mike Davies Fitness into your search engine, and I'm sure you'll find him.

I'm hoping my perky personality will show thru and the judges will like me...ironically, I love squats its one of my fav things to do....i only work legs once a week b/c they bulk up very quickly....i wish i can say the same for my upper body...a few peeps over at muscle mayhem recommended mike davies too, so i guess thats all the convincing i need to give him a ring...

I understand the perky personality. I DO see that coming through!!! As someone who is 5'2", I can see eye to eye with you on that!!! ;D
Check out Mike's site.
Not sure where you're at (geographically), but a lot of Mike's client's are all around (including Checkoslavakia!!)(sp?) For example: In my area, there is Mari Kudla, and Valerie Waugaman, both excellent PRO figure competitors. You're on the right track, so keep on networking girl!
Also, the reason I mentioned squats is I remember a lot of Mikes training. He always told the girls that squats will give them a big "butt"! He also told them things like, " I CAN teach you to lift a weight, but I CAN'T teach you how to put down a fork!"
On an aside....there is a LOT of politics in figure and fitness, who you know, who you train with, what organization (ie: NPC, NABBA, etc.) So be careful, and use your senses, and you'll know what's right for YOU.

Who told you you were 8%? Even with a degree of water retention you should still see more seperation at that kind of level...I was 15% in my photos so you need to focus more on how you LOOK rather than the numbers(we have all been down this road,believe me! ) I agree with Franks comments about your upper vs lower balance,my legs are also bigger than my upper body so I have to be careful not to do any really heavy weights on them. For upper body I would concentrate firstly on rounding out your shoulders and developing more of a V taper in your back THEN I would do a good long diet in phase for your show. We all love competing on here but if you want to improve your placing next timeI would suggest you spend a wee bit more time on what I suggested then diet for a show maybe a few months down the track from where you were aiming Good Luck!!

thank you both....well let me tell you that my first experience in NPC was interesting...i was told by some of the girls that i should start a cycle of something if i really want to compete...which was 1) surprising to me that someone who didn't know me would say that, 2) that in figure girls would do that...after that i kinda knew what to expect from who...personally i think w/hard work and discipline girls can be toned and well defined...for the big butt, thats inherited :-) i'm half cuban/irish....for the 8% thats what the chick measured me at in the show but then again she measured me at 5'3" when i'm 5ft even go figure (no pun intended)...but i don't think i was that bad considering i was 150lbs at one point in my 20s...i spoke to the judges afterwards and they all felt the same that it was more my diet than anything...thats why i started a bit early in training for April so i can fine tune things the best i can and i do agree that it may ttake some trial and error before i can get up there w/the pro's....it'll only make me a better competitor in doing so....o, and mr.beefy i'm from NYC!

Well I think you butt actually looked pretty good compared to a few of the others I think you will be told about the 'alternative substances' quite a bit along your competitive journey-alot of women use clenbuterol to get lean but thats definitely not something I advocate!! You are right,good old fashioned hard work in the gym and a clean diet goes a long way to presenting a great package-some people just want the easy or fast route....and at some point you may have to make that choice.But certainly not now when you are just starting out!! Good luck with your dieting-maybe set up a journal so we can see how you're going?

Beckie had a few great comments there.
First, professionally speaking of course ;D, your butt is fine. Genetics do play a lot in this game too. Symmetry is very important, especially in figure, so Beckie's suggested about V-Taper and shoulder work sounds right-on.
Many beginners hear things about the chemical enhanced side of our sport. I will not comment on that in this forum, but know that there are MANY health risks involved. Also, there are a lot of drug tested shows, so you are limiting your approach and dabbling in things that could cause you in the least, disqualification after a LOT of hard work, and at the worst, severe health and legal problems. I have read that any dabbling in this area is for the athlete that has been int his game a LONG time, and is at a professional level. I'll stop there.
I didn't mean to sound "preachy" but I would hate to see somone who has SO MUCH POTENTIAL, as you DO, throw it away so quickly. BE VERY careful in this train of thought...please. Work on getting your diet and workout perfected as much as possible first.

For bodyfat, I get something done called a BodPod. It will measure your body fat and lean muscle mass to the exact gram, and is HIGHLY accurate. I'm not sure where you could find one in NY....TIM...any suggestions?

hi mr. beefy,
to be honest the reason why i wanted to compete b/c its my rebellion against getting older...by this i mean keeping healthy, staying fit and of course looking good....i always admired bodybuilders since i was a kid...my uncle use to compete when he was a cop.....i was just really surprised that alot of the girls were so willing to talk about the enhancements and even suggested them to me the day of the show...some even told me that its the only way to place or win...but to each his/her own...i don't knock it but personally i don't want to try it...this is never a road i want to consider...i think good ol'hard work is good enough and its even good enough to place and win...its all about the dedication and discipline...and i think self full filling to know that you sculpt your body to look a certain way....i actually like when i'm a little sore the next day b/c i know i worked hard....and the eating for me is easy its just what and how to eat...
yes, i agree w/Beckie on the V-shape look...that is my goal to achieve....i will send pics though out my progress so every can critque me...i welcome all feedback....i'll post some pics of how i look now this weekend.
as for NYC, this chica is born and raised here :-) and the BodPod if i can't find it in the city i'll find it online....
