Woke up yesterday at 5am, worked at my job. Then came home and took about a half an hour nap and got woken up by my phone. Couldn't go back to sleep, and I knew I needed to because I had a gig last night. Played a gig from 9:30pm to 1:30am, and got home at 2am. Woke up this morning at 4:35am and went to work. I can't see straight, and (not like I ever could) I can't think straight..... Tim, will you tuck me in to my bed for a nap?

I know what you mean about being tired. I'm not playing can you top this but yesterday I got up for work at 2AM. I was working on about 3 hours sleep. I got off at noon and my boss wanted me to work overtime.
I also know what you mean about wanting two pillows. The last time I had two pillows Steve Martin was smacking my hands away. (Obscure reference to Planes, Trains, and Automobiles)
I keep having the same dream. Jennifer Lopez is on my bed dancing holding onto a brass pole. She has on high heels and nothing else. She says to me do you want to play. Just when I'm about to answer Tim comes into the bedroom. He says,"Oldtimer1. It's time to go to the gym, it's delt and arm day." Then Jennifer disappears. I always wake up in a drenched in sweat. Do you think I need a psychiatrist? I need more rest.

(Obscure reference to Planes, Trains, and Automobiles) It's not an obscure reference- that's why I said it in the first place. Either nobody picked up on it, or no one said anything. Maybe I should talk about some of my road tours where I would not get more than 2 hours a night for more than a week straight. Just driving from gig to gig, and then having to get up in what seemed to be the best sleep you'd ever gotten, to drive through Nebraska (the most boring of states to drive and there is so much of it-560 miles east to west).

Youngblood, What type of band do you play in? Are you in a cover band playing small clubs. It must be some life. What instrument do you play?
I have have been working revolving shift work for 22 years. The lack of sleep can play havoc with both your mind and body. I can remember many a work day coming off work at 7AM wondering how I would drive home. I use to have this crazy schedule where I worked 4 days starting at 6A. Then with out a break I would have to work 4 midnight shifts. I don't know how I got my workouts in.
Sorry for repeating your joke about the pillows. Planes,Trains, and Automobiles is one of my favorite movies.
I'm from NJ. When you spoke about Nebraska it reminded me of a time I rode a bicycle across Iowa. My brother talked me into riding with a tour group across the state. It's the biggest bike tour in the country. The guys in my group were biking maniacs and they kept a serious pace for the 50 to 90 miles a day we rode. What struck me about Iowa is that it seems to be stuck in time. I imagine that I was back in the 50's riding though the state. The little scenic towns seemed untouched from the 50's or earlier. It was what I imagined the Andy Griffin show town to be. Really friendly people. Since I'm a cynical city guy I always wondered what their motivation was for their kindness. Another thing that stuck in my mind was the amount of cars from the early 80's that looked in mint shape. I saw them everywhere in Iowa. Well enough of my rambling.

Oldtimer-
I play in numerous cover bands, and mainly in bars. I've played festivals all over the US, Canada and bars everywhere in between. Been to all states except South Dakota, Massachusets, Jersey, Deleware, RI, Maryland. Mostly I play covers, but occasionally some of the people I play with write their own songs, but never anything outside of blues standards. I play guitar, and my main focus is blues, R&B, Jazz and soul music. But I listen to everything from Classical, Metal, Pop, Fusion, punk, Reggae (the type I listen to is better known as Rocksteady) and everything in between-except rap; it's not music, it's machines. Often times on the road, the band would drive from here in SF to Orlando straight through. Then do 2 gigs, and come all the way back to Lake Tahoe, which is on the Nevada/CA border. One time I did a tour where we left CA and drove straight to Louisville. Did one gig there, then up to Kansas City for the Grand Emporium the night after Louisville. Slept and went to Springfield,IL for a night and then left Springfeild after the gig and headed to Patoski MI (at the northern tip). Slept after Patoski and then drove to Traverse City MI, and slept a few hour then headed to Toledo OH, and played there. Slept a few hours and woke up to head to Chicago for the House Of Blues, left immediately after that gig and headed for Lincoln Nebraska-where we were to play and head out that night after the gig and go North to Minneapolis MI. All of us were too tired to drive, so we basically held a mutiny and told the bandleader we weren't driving that night and we needed to sleep. So we got up after 3 hours sleep and then got in the van! From Minneapolis we headed to Chicago again to play Eddie Clearwaters Reservation Blues club for ridiculous circumstances that NO BAND should have to endure in this day and age. Got a few hours of sleep and then drove to Ann Arbor MI and played, and then I stayed over with the waitress to have a few drinks then went back to the hotel hoping for some shut eye. The band leader mentioned that he would call everyone and tell us wether or not we would have a late checkout time. Never did, so the entire band woke up at 10am to get ready to leave, and ended up sitting in the lobby for two hours, when the band leader comes down everyone was pissed and he says "Why's everyone here so early? I told everyone that we had a late checkout." After a confrontation, we headed to Saginaw MI and played a neat little bar called "Whites Bar." We stayed in the bus all day, not having any rooms to shower and change in. We wound up changing in the back of the bar where they kept the extra kegs and the empties. Played the gig and had fun, even for being so tired. I met a couple of girls there and was <this close> to not getting any more rest and being with them. However, the bandleaded had different plans. We drove from Saginaw to Charleston, WV. All of us got our room keys and went our seperate ways (we never got our own rooms, always had roommates) without so much as mumbling to each other. Everyone slept from 8am when we arrived to 2pm when it was time for load-in/soundcheck. We all got up after that being the best sleep any of us got that trip and set up our gear. Went back to our rooms and got ready, then played our first song for 20mins (instructions from the employers) and took a two hour break. I went to my room and watched TV, because I knew I would sleep through the gig if I tried to knock out. Finished the gig and just HOPING to stay in the Embassy Suites to get a good nights rest before we went back home, didn't happen. We jumped in the van and drove to St. Louis to drop off the bandleader to see his wife and kid- so we lost a driver there. The St. Louis was just a drop off and we left there for SF and arrived 3 days later without more than 3 hour naps in between daylight/driving rotation/people talking due to the other reasons cited above. Got home, and slept the first day. Played Fourth of July with the bandleader (who flew home)in a different band and had another day off. Then, not even unpacking from the previous trip, loaded the van and played in Sacramento and straight after the gig, we drove to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I fell asleep at the wheel going over the Sierras I was so tired. It was "only" in the straightaways, and I'd be awake for the corners knowing I needed to concentrate, then knod off again in the next straightaway. I got to Reno and handed the wheel over to someone else. Then woke up and stayed awake till the border. We couldn't get across because they were closed till 8am, so we parked at the rest stop and slept for 4hours in the van upright. The windows were down, so I woke up to being eaten alive by misquitos. Drove another few hours to Edmonton and checked in, and finally with seperate hotel rooms for a week for all of us. All I did was sleep. Believe it or not, I lived for 2.5 years like that. I'm so glad that that phase of my life is over with. Worst part of all of that, I was only being paid $500/week for that, not including any meals or per diem.
