Immediately following my Friday workout, my upper back has ceased up!! I'm feeling this killer burning between the shoulder blades and I can't lift my arms up above my head. Lots of pain. I've been applying heat and ice (20 min. of one followed immediately by 20 min. of the other). The only thing I did differently was squats on the smith machine. I went heavy (365) for about 4 reps but had to strip it down to 275 because of my footing. I've gone heavier before. Any suggestions?

Okay, I've figured out it's probably a pinched nerve (hence the burning). I'm off the heat and only using cold. This seems to be helping.

Thanks Beckie and Sin. I'm on the way to recovery but it still burns between the blades. I'm still going to the gym in the morning but I'm going to take it easy.

Could have been the weight of the bar compressing down. hanging stretches? massage therapist? Had a deep massage but didn't really help. I'm going to look into a chiropractor.

Chiropractor's are ok, just be careful who you go to. I have seen several instances with patients who have gone to a chiropractor and end up worse off.........just be carfeul. ;D Try 800mg ibuprofen (over the counter 4-200mg tablets) and try a heating pad. It opens the blood vessels and is VERY soothing!!! Also as Tim said, train smart.

Thanks Tim and Karrie for the suggestions. I'm actually on some anaprox. Seems to be helping quite a bit. I'll just take it easy this week and see how it goes. I figured out how this happened! When I was doing squats with the smith, I pushed my shoulders to far back. This was an unnatural position and hence the pinched nerve.

I finally got an appointment to see my doctor tomorrow. I'm also going to schedule a massage. My guess is, little docatory is going to perscribe some hardcore drugs to numb the pain. I did end up taking some perks to help me sleep but that too didn't help. For now I'm taking Karrie's suggestions and taking ibuprofen. I've been using ice but I might try the heat instead. #flamingsmiley3zp#

Just got back from the doc. It's a pinched nerve. Gave me a script for physio/massage and an rx for Toradol. Also said to apply heat. I've got to go back in a week for a progress update. Told me it was okay to continue working out but to lighten up on the weights (especially the squats, deads, and shoulder press) until the pain is gone. It will take a lot longer than a muscle tear to heal but it will heal.

TNA,
Been there done that. It does not take much, when lifting heavy for something to go out. Just a slight different angle and there it goes. Keep up the heat and ice therapy. Take IB Profen for an anti inflamatory. Try and relax it for a while.

Went to the doctor today for a follow-up. All seems to be going well. He injected some local freezing for me so I can workout with little to no pain. I'm going to be doing this weekly until the pain completely goes.

I'm going to be doing this weekly until the pain completely goes. What do you mean by "freezing?" Usually you are injected with a cortisone/steroid or lidocaine that sort of "blocks" the pain. I am glad to hear you slowly doing well!!!! ;D ;D Our back we use SOOO much and do not realize just HOW MUCH until we injury it!!!i
