I recetnly purchased a dvd copy of the 1984 Mr. Universe. This is the show that Mike Christains, Rich Gaspari, and John Hnatashack(or however you spell his name, sorry) turned pro.
First let me say that I got this off ebay, fairly cheap. But it is a copy of the ESPN broadcast.
Even so it made me cry!
It made me cry because, in my opinion this was the best time for bodybuilding. The athletes weren't engorged with chemicals, and looked and acted healthy. Imagine that!!!
They even "ran" off the stage when they were done with their routines!!!!!!!!!!! Unbelievable.
Now the middles did look like the lightweights of today, and the light heavies looked more like the middles of today, but still. This was a time when the athletes still looked awesome but not freaky! This was also a time when the general public came the closest to accept the sport.
Gone our those days and I shed a tear.

Agree, Steve. Remember seeing this on ESPN and it was a great show. That was a time when th US dominated that competition. All those athletes were superb and in great condition.
