What do you all think about this? I was doing DB presses at my gym today and the DBs sorta clanked together at the top. Nothing crazy, not LOUD, but I got reprimanded by a gym employee telling me I can't bang the Dbs together. Huh?? Isn't this a gym??? I wasn't smashing them together.

Oh I'm sure you were just tossing your weight around....just kidding. I would have just told that employee it was by accident and that you were not trying to damage the Db's. I do that QUITE often...not loud either. I know at my gym they have signs posted not to bang or toss the weights and guys do it all the time. I would not worry too much about it but again, if it were me I would definitely make sure that employee knew it was by pure accident.

Same thing at my gym.......as I set the 100 pound db`s down as gently as humanly possible, for a guy who weighs 165 at times, without tearing my arm out of the socket,I have some kid tell me to try to be quieter. It`s a cinch this sucker never lifted anything heavier than the 5 pound pink dumbells for curls or someting!! I miss the old school gyms, where being an animal was considered a good thing!! #arockon6ha# I just train on and could care less as I am only tyrying not to injure myself,as I know for a fact they`re not going to pay my doctor bills. They put a lifting platform with a half-assed power rack at one end of the gym not long ago........some kid was doing deadlifts and bouncing the weight off the floor just a bit and they told him to quiet down..........duh`,that`s why it`s called a lifting platform!! No clue as to what a real gym should be,as opposed to a pansy ass fitness center. Rant off!! ;D #smileyonsoapbox4jy#

I hate gyms like that. But I once read a Lee Priest article where he claims that you would never know that he trained in the corner till you saw him leave- he never made any sounds. This, coupled with how some people (okay, I'll admit it, women view it as...) view "grunters" as meatheads, so I stopped making a lot of noise. Though I never had a problem to begin with, I don't have one now either. If I make a lot of noise, then you know I'm at the end of my rope in a set. If they have a problem with that, they A) lose a member B) getting a flying DB coming towards them and C) A BB shoved where the sun doesn't shine.

Thank goodness it isn't me, PLEASE like I was showing off??? I was too busy getting that weight UP to even think about that!!! The way I see it if you aint grunting and moaning and slamming weights around you aren't lifting heavy enough!!! AM I RIGHT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

sounds like a new employee that has not lifted weights for a long time? I say just work out and don't let little things like that bother you. unless the owner is complaining then it is time to look for a new gym like RUBICON19 says.

Back in my powerlifting days I screamed a lot on max lifts......before I even touched the weight!!! #awithstupid5gf# Everyone did these weird psyche up rituals before they lifted...........chalking their foreheads, slapping the sh*te out of each other, banging their heads on a wall or the bar before squatting, pacing and screaming.....real animal stuff and I saw some grreat lifts. Now I realize that it`s just a lot of wasted energy, but when your adreniline was flying back in those days ,we just went off and screamed like nuts!! LOL I do emit some strange sounds a lot of times when training hard. One guy told me not long ago that I was sounding like I was in pain while I was doing DB curls down the rack...............I just glared at him and told him that unlike him,I had goals to reach! He just hung his head and walked away......wimp...........shoulda` handed him the pink dumbells !!

Thats a crock of crap. What you did it once? Please! At my gym, we got the rules posted.. don't slam the weights and please no excessive noise.. are they followed? hell no! I know I've been known to make some noise. But its more like.. yeah come on, come get some, ETC. never too loud because the music is on. The only thing I do that like makes noises is when I deadlift, I umm, yeah slam the plates to the ground. Look, when your pulling 405 for reps or benching 120 dbs, sometimes it kinda hard to not slam them ABIT. I know guys hwo do like 50 dbs and slam them and I give them a look like.. WUSSY.
hey TIM, I was one of those meatheads who used to do some crazy stuff before I did stuff like deadlifts..err I kinda still do :-P

i remember this happened to me after i got done pressing the 150s once. I told the employee that if he can "set them down easy" i'd give him 10 bucks then and there
he declined to try

It's a no win for anyone because obviously we are trying to push ourselves and if the manager does see the skinny trainer ignore any noise he/she gets in trouble. (I was that guy once LOL)
Gyms like that stick. Who cares if you make a little noise, maybe if everyone else worked that hard they'd get results!

My friend Jon from college, his gym took away all the db > 100 so they could get rid of the "meatheads". I'd go elsewhere if they took away my 100 and higher dbs..

... The worst part is that during the time this employee is warning you, there is 3 or 4 kids in the gym doing exercises the wrong way and are very close to hurt themself by trying to use one of their foot during a triceps cable press down ;D (I've really seen things like this... and no employee did anything... too busy telling someone not to bang dumbels together or not to wear tank top... )
That's why now, i dont choose my gym only in fonction of the proximity... but in fonction of the kind of customer they are looking for... (look at the marketing guy trying to explain his theory ;D )
