Max, I've never tried breaking my sleep up into segments...I'm one of those people that once they're up..they're up till the end of the day. No naps in the PM, etc,. On a related note... I know alot is made of sleep requirements, but my whole LIFE I have never felt comfortable sleeping more than 6 hours at a time. I usually sleep from 4.5 -5 hours nightly, and sometimes only 4, at most, in the latter stages of contest prep, as my body is pretty well wired at that point!! Asked my doc about it a long time ago, especially in relation to recuperation from the intense training I do, and he said if I feel fine, then that's what's right for me. I actually feel sluggish if I sleep more than 6 hours! Once again, it comes down to individual differences and genetics!

Great post MC. I have to get an average of 6 hours per day. I'm better on 6-7. If I sleep more than that I too am sluggish, but if I sleep less, my sinuses/allergies flare up and I get sick. I think one of the main reasons, if I remember right, is that after 6 hours you get another Growth Hormone output. Plus our bodies are wired to sleep at night all at once. At least I believe that. That's why melatonin increases when the sun sets.

I'm a wreck if I get less than 8! I mean, I'll feel it if I only get 7.5!!! These days I'll try to get as close to eight a night, but usually it works out to be about 7-7.5, then as soon as I get home from work, I crash for sometimes an hour or more if I'm dog tired. These days, I'm out for up to an hour and a half towards the end of the week. When I felt the most rested, I was getting 9.5 hours per night. I wish I had the schedule to do that again. Hell, I wish I had a schedule that allowed me to sleep past 2:45am!!!

Sleep should not be broken up into segments. Breaking sleep up into segments will actually make you more tired than sleeping to long. I will try to make this short as possible and in laymans terms...
Sleep works on a cycle like the hands moving around the clock. You have 5 stages of sleep 1,2,3,4 and REM. Those stages should happen ruffly every 2 hours. Yes that means every 2 hours you should be dreaming give or take 1/2-1 hour but you get the point, i hope. This should occur in a continuous rhythm untill the body is rested. Stages 3 & 4 the is when the body rest and REM is when the mind is resting. Think of 1 & 2 as like a primer for the body to get into rest mode. Now if you break up this rhythm in any way what happens is the sleep starts over to 1 and tries to work its way back up. So by breaking up yuour sleep your body or mind will not get the proper rest it needs. Thus you wake up tired, sluggish or grumpy...Hope this helps. Any questions feel free to ask me. Just so all know i work in the sleep medicine field performing sleep studies. Been doing it for over 5 years now....

Hoopie made good points-alot of its to do with hormonal and other biological functions so for me i need 8 hours sleep minimum or I flake out in the afternoon. Naps do not work for me....

I`m lucky if I get 5-6 hours a night, but I function well on this amount.
If I get 8 hours,I feel draggy and sluggish.
My major problem is that I wake up a lot throughout the night, and it usually takes me a long time to get to sleep once I hit the sack.
At times I catch a nap during the day which helps to recharge me..............I could never do this when I was younger as once I was up,I was up to stay, but now that I`m an old relic, the occasional naps help a lot.

Hey Boss question for you. Do you still have tonsils and adnoids? Wakeing up alot is a sign of a sleeping disorder/sleep apnes. You dont have to be over weight to have sleep apnea. That is a common missconception with sleep apnea. People will say, but i am not over weight. Thats not the only thing that cause sleeping disorders. Just curious Boss on the question however.

Steve, yes, tonsils and adnoids are still intact.....missing a few thousand brain cells though!! LOL ;D I beleive my problems stem from anxiety issues.......I have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.

It looks like everyone has different needs when it comes to sleep. I find that I usually sleep about 4 hours continuously before I wake up. If I simply get up for the day, then I'm exhausted. If I try to get right back to sleep, I can't. SOO.. what I do is take the opportunity to get up, have a protien shake or PBJ or whatever, hop online (Tim's site these days!) and go back to bed after being up an hour. I go right into a deep sleep and easily wake up in a few hours when the alarm goes off. I feel most rested this way. Sounds wierd but works for me.
