Hi guys.
Let me start by saying this annual event in Pittsburgh has turned out to be an annual event for me to catch up with some really great friends.
Every year my friends Mike and Martin (who run http://www.bodybuildingreviews.com) come down to report on the contest. GerryT also comes in from NY. As many of you know Gerry coaches several athletes each year (on their posing).
All 3 are true gentlemen and I enjoy spending time with them.
(MIke thanks again for lunch)
I also get a chance to meet new people I know from the board.
This year I met "Hoopie, " and his lovely wife Michelle.
It was great meeting you 2.
About the show:
First and foremost let me say this show has grown too big. The evening show started at 6:00pm and wasn't over unti 1:30am!!
Some things need to change.
Perhaps Gary Udit (show promoter) should have prejudging and night shows for the teens and collegiates on Friday night.
The prejudging for the masters were held on Friday, and thankfully they were. Prejudging started around 9:30am on saturday and didn't finish up until 5:00pm.
All in all it was a good show, but for the second year in a row (in my opinion) the women showed more talent and depth.
The winner of the women's over 35, reminded me alot of Lenda Murray. Her last name was "Buck." She had an awesome back, that tapered into a small waist, and beautiful sweeping quads with good seperation. She was big, but still mainted a good sense of feminity.
The teen winner was a complete surprise. The classes in the teens were full of young potential, but lacked a little depth.
In my opinion the middleweight or Dave Hawk (I think dave was a light heavy (Dave's farther is the Dave Hawk a pro from the 80's.) SHould have won the class, instead they gave it to the heavyweight (I think he was a super heavyweight).
The audience was shocked.
The collegiate overall winner was a huge man, whose last name was Price, I think. He had tremendous delts, chest, and legs. Huge was the word.
The mens masters were interesting to watch. The over 70's were an inspiration to us all all.
The over 60's were truely awesome to watch.
But the over 50's looked very good. The over 50 overall winner was James Hampton. James as competed on and off for several decades. He was a light heavywieght during the 80's who finished in the top 5 almost every year, but never won his weight class. This had to be the best year I have ever seen James. Ripped throughout the arms and delts, he had improved his back definition as well. Although the back lacks thickness, his conditioning countered that.
His quads were also improved looked very good. His conditioning, aesthetics, and size kept a very very good Randy Lampalla away from the overall and a pro card.
The over 40 was a good show, but this year the contest looked to be losing a little steam.
The weight classes were smaller in number, and in depth.
Dave Pullichini looked awesome and deserved at least 3rd but had to settled for 4th in the heavies.
The super hevies were won by Rodney Davis, and he did look good, with an awesome V-taper. But he wasn't as sharp as he was last year. Still he managed the second pro card.
3rd place in the super's was won by a man whose last name is Hudson. Big and tight, his routine was entertaining. At one point he yelled out at the very tired and now dwindling audiance, and asked "do you want to go home?"
He deserved 2nd and a possible consideration for 1st.
John Cutri won the heavies and looked the best I have ever seen him. Ripped and super shredded with the best hamstrings in the entire show. Awesome and deserving of the overall and his pro card. There are 2 types of aesthetics. One is the Flex wheeler type, the flowing lines and small tight waist. The other is more like a steve reeves, were everything is in proportion. Johh's physique is reminds me of reeves.
On another note
It was also nice seeing some folks that I know from around the area. Ed a friend of mine runs a successful gym in Leechburg Pa. He knows everyone.
I also ran into Bill Willmore. Bill is qualified for this years Olympia and confirmed he is doing it. He looked huge.
WHen Bill was a teen, he and I trained at the same gym. He remembers me from those days, and even took the time to aks how everything was going and if I was married and where I worked. It was nice to know that Bill is such a great guy he doens't forget people who knew, even if it was just for a very brief moment a long time ago.
Thanks to all that I ran into for making the night enjoyable.
Thanks to Martin and Mike and Gerry for lunch and great company.
It was a long but very enjoyable night.
