Max, If it's not due to a hormonal imbalance(rare), the primary cause, in the general public, is usually due to taking a medication that increases the estrogen level. There are acne, prostate and several other types of medication that can cause this. Even the use of some of the old pro-hormones could do this as well. BUT.... in the bodybuilding world, the primary cause is the heavy use of steroids that aromatize easily, such as the testosterone compounds, and/or the failure to use anti estrogen therapy when on a steroid cycle. In most moderate to severe cases the only remedy is to have the tissue surgically removed. There are a number of top pros who have had the procedure done.

Besides the use of steroids..how can you "imbalance" the hormones?

By taking medications that I mentioned. It can occur naturally, but again that is rare. Ever see the kid in gym class with the "man-boobs"?....his level of estrogen is probably higher than what is typical in males. ( all males have a small amount of estrogen, that fluctuates in response to testosterone production.) This can occur as the estrogen tries to keep pace, proportionally, with the increased testosterone production in a young boy...it is rarely a naturally occuring event if the boy is beyond the age of 13-14. If steroids are used, the body will try to raise the estrogen levels as the testosterone levels are skyrocketing. If you ain't got em now Max, don't worry about it unless you take steroids, or the other medications I listed.
If you want more information, do a google on gynecomastia.

who knows if i got them or not. My chest does have some fatty tissue..but i'm not at a low bf either because i haven't got off my bulk yet.
My nipples sometimes gets soft...and makes my chest look like boobs...when they're hard..my chest actually looks like pecs. I thought it might be gyno...but i'm not sure.

If they've ( nipples) never felt sore to the touch or "itchy", then you probably just have excess fatty tissue in the area.

I have these horrible fat deposits in my nipple area. Sucks, because I'm a bit self-concious of it, thinking others may suspect it to be due to roid use (it's not). But once I diet down, it all goes away. Once you lean out, Max, I bet you it will all go bye-bye!!!!

As Champ mentioned, there are cases of simple pubertal gyno that occur when the body begins to make testosterone, some of which is then converted to estrogen. Because breast tissue has estrogen receptors present, estrogen can bind and induce cellular proliferation. If someone does get this, most doctors will say that the only "cure" is surgery, however recent studies have shown that the SERM raloxifene is effective in reducing pubertal gyno.
