John Little, I think, wrote a piece in Ironman about ray Mentzer about a year or so ago. In it, he claimed that Ray performed a double with 900 pounds in the squat. He claimed his program was one max set per week on the squat and thgat Ray went from 700 or so to the 900 double in several weeks.
Pardon me for thinking that John Little is a bunco artist.

Bob, I saw a referance to this on Iron Age,and while I know Ray Mentzer was a strong guy, I do however find it very hard to beleive that he was as strong as Don Reihoudt.A 200 pound gain on the squat in several weeks , from a man who has trained hard for years is a bit much for me to beleive. If I saw it with my own two eyes I would still have to check the weights to see if they were real or made of styrofoam! ;D Who know`s ?But it is a bit much.

Tim, I believe that a 900 pound squatter that layed off for a bit could increase his squat from 700-900 in two months. I just do not believe that Ray Mentzer ever came close to a 900 pound legitimate powerlifting style squat.
By the way, I saw Fred Hatfield do around 600 for 5 easy reps around May 1982, in Atlanta, at a NSCA convention. He was a 181 pounder then. Very trim. He wasn't peaking or pushing it all that hard and the squats were very similar to Olympic style.

I agree totally as far as Ray Mentzer`s supposed squat prowess goes. Now Hatfield on the other hand, is a squatting machine, and I could easily see him doing the 600 at 181 lbs. He didn`t get that "Dr. Squat" monicker for nothing!
